“Oh, yeah.” I’d never been so bored, yet so interested, in a conversation. “So, what do we do?”

“Emily, use your magic to make a distraction on the right side of the palace. They’re coming out on the left.”

Emily nodded, running forward before I could even tell her good luck. She was going headfirst into the chaos. Her arms raised, and she shot out a line of fire so long I couldn’t see anything besides red and yellow flames bursting to life, emerging from her palm like a dragon’s breath.

As soon as she did, she rolled like a damn ninja behind the bush, jumping from tree to tree, hiding for a moment before hopping to the next.

Where the hell had that come from? Since when was she a professional at stealth?

“Now what?” she huffed, out of breath. Her hands rested on her knees as she tried to steady her breathing.

Before Ember could answer, a giant wolf burst from the flames, sprinting at full speed toward us. I jumped back on instinct, pulling Emily with me.

The wolf stopped in front of us, Rohan clutching onto his back. “Griffin?” Emily asked, reaching out to pet the wolf. “Thank God you’re okay! What the hell happened in there?”

“They found us,” Rohan said, not moving from Griffin’s back. “We had to fight them off, and I got an injury to the leg, so Griffin transformed and busted us out of there. Thanks to the fire on the east wing, the guards had rushed off, giving us enough of an advantage to escape. Now, let’s get the hell out of here.”

I pulled off my clothes, shoved them in my bag, and handed it to Emily. “Get on,” I said before changing into my wolf form. Emily climbed onto my wolf, wrapping her arms around my neck. Ember climbed onto Griffin’s back, helping Rohan to keep a good grip.

Damn, poor Griffin would have a sore back later. Our wolf forms were much larger than a typical wolf, but it was still difficult to carry multiple people when we weren’t used to it.

We took off into the woods, unsure if Newt was coming back like he said. But we didn’t have time to wait around and find out. We needed to get out of there.

Despite our efforts, the guards were gaining on us, quickly.

Where the hell was Newt? He promised to meet us after. Maybe he was screwing with us all along, setting up the dumb humans. Or maybe, he couldn’t find us because we took off running.

A massive explosion in the distance caused us to stop in our tracks.

Holy shit! They were using bombs! I thought fae didn’t use technology.

Another explosion, this time closer. No way we could outrun that.

A third explosion, maybe 100 yards away.

I squeezed my eyes shut, turning my snout from the burned smell that invaded my nostrils. Smoke from the explosions rose in the air, surrounding us, making the atmosphere tainted with the soot that rained down like a silent snowfall.

“There you are, you crazy bastards!” Newt appeared in front of us, cackling with laughter, slapping his knee. “I thought I’d lost you there for a minute.”

That man had the balls to call us crazy?

“I hope you got the documents,” he said, straightening his aviator hat and goggles. “I just used three good bombs for you!”

“Yeah,” Rohan said, digging through his jacket and pulling out the papers. “I got your stupid documents. Here!” He shoved them forward and Newt jumped ecstatically.

“Haha, yes!” Waving the documents in the air, he hooted and hollered, thrilled with our results. “You’ve proved yourself an asset to the revolution. For that, you have our alliance. I’m going to send you off now, and we’ll take care of the guards.”

I looked around to see that a battle had formed in a matter of seconds. The fae we’d seen at the camp were fighting the guards from the palace.

“I’m sending you to the demon realm. Find Amon. He’ll help you. He owes me a favor.”

The chaos abruptly ended as Newt transported us to what we guessed was the demon realm. He did it so damn fast we didn’t have time to react or ask questions. We were surrounded by a wasteland of dirt and bare peaked mountains—the sky red like an eternal fire. I couldn’t tell if this was supposed to be daylight or nighttime. Hell, does the demon realm even have day and night, or is it a perpetual blood sky?

Emily hopped off my back, and my wolf whined in response. Despite the tense battleground, we’d just been in, I liked how Emily’s arms felt when they held onto my scruff.

Griffin and I changed back into our human form. The others shielded their eyes as we slipped into our clothes again, taking in the world through our human eyes.

What the hell were we doing here, and who was Amon? Where were we supposed to go? None of us had ever been to the demon realm and had no idea what to expect. With no answers, we blindly chose a direction and started walking.
