A demon popped out from behind a rock, stopping us from walking further. A wide grin spread its mouth from ear to ear—or, what I assumed to be ears if it had them. Their skin was dark gray, and they had large eyes that covered half their face, the smile covering the other half. No nose to speak of, and no hair, either.

They opened their mouth, revealing sharp, pointed teeth along the entire row. They licked their lips, drool dripping from their mouth.

“Well, hello, humans.”

They stepped forward slowly, each step leaving dust in its wake. “You look divinely delicious.”

The tone was ominous, with a hint of humor that none of us found funny.

“I can’t wait to taste your skin from my fingertips.” Their hands were raised, flashing claws that would terrify even the mightiest wolf. “It’s been so long since I had human blood.”

Griffin and I instinctively stepped in front of Emily as the demon readied itself to pounce. They were stopped only by another voice, another figure, appearing like a mirage from behind them.

“Pace yourself, Ghilan. You know you’re on probation, remember?”

This other demon had a voice that was stern and authoritative. Perhaps he was a demon of higher status. Did demons have a hierarchy?

“Oh, but I wanted to eat their flesh,” the demon whined. “Come on, Tengu! He has pretty skin.” They pointed to Griffin, who looked around and behind him, pointing at himself with an inquisitive look when he found no one else in the line of the demon’s finger.

“Get out, Ghilan. Now. Before I tell Amon.”

Ghilan ran off, peeking back once more at Griffin, licking his lips. Now, it was only Mr. Authority standing with us.

“Excuse me,” Emily said, stepping forward. I stepped with her, facing the demon but shielding my mate. Why did she always have to walk up to danger? We had enough chasing us.

“You mentioned the name, Amon? Could you possibly lead us to them?”

The demon sighed, an annoyed expression on his face that was far too human for my liking. “Very well,” he muttered, motioning us to follow. “I will lead you to Amon and the Deadly Seven.”
