"That is not true," Kao shouted, then quietly added, "anymore."

I already knew about Kao loving the single life before we mated, so I wasn't going to give him a hard time about it. Admittedly it was fun to see his face the color of a firetruck.

Shaking her head, Sabina went back to the topic at hand. "Anyway, I said that Selene was my mother."

"That's crazy," Javier exclaimed. "If Selene was your mother, then... then that would make you..."

"That would make me a demigod," Sabina finished. "I know, crazy, right?"

ROSIE

Sabina was a demigod, an actual demigod. What in the Percy Jackson was going on in the world?

"I always wondered if demigods existed." Roxanne leaned back on her arms, looking too relaxed considering what all we've been through so far. "My coven thought they were myths. As fictional as their godly parents."

"I thought so too," Sabina agreed. "Believe me, I had a hard time believing it myself. I'm not even sure I've really let the reality sink in. One minute I had my mother visiting my dreams and telling me what she needed for me to do, and the next thing I know, I was leaving the pack to look for Rowan."

"When did you leave Kingsrose?" I asked. Last I recalled, Sabina stayed at the lodge when the rest of us took off. We asked her if she wanted to come with us, but she told us she wanted to stay and keep an eye on the rest of the pack. I thought with her sticking around, she'd find a way to keep an eye on Joaquin and ultimately help bust him out of whatever imprisonment Pierce bound him to. At least now I knew why I couldn't get a hold of her. I thought it was because Pierce was keeping an eye on her, but she was out on the road too.

Sabina moved her light auburn locks away from her face as she huffed out a breath. "I left shortly after you guys did. The cops were already at the lodge because of all the gunshots, so of course they had to investigate. Considering all the dead bodies littering the front of the lodge, it wasn't a pretty picture."

I swallowed the lump in my throat, remembering the night of the full moon and the chaos that ensued because of me. "So... is—is Joaquin..."

"Byron has been watching Joaquin during my absence. I'm sure sooner or later, he'll help Joaquin escape and will be looking for us."

"How can you be sure of that? Byron is Pierce's most loyal beta. I doubt he'd be helping us," Kao argued, which diminished any little hope that was growing inside me at Sabina's words.

Sabina smirked, clearly knowing something that we weren't getting. "Loyalty had its limits, and Byron's path will be tested. I trust he'll do what's right."

"I don't like the idea of putting my faith in someone whose sense of duty may or may not waver. Besides, I don't think it'll matter much since Del and Kai went back to Kingsrose to get Joaquin," I said. Maybe with some luck, Byron would change his mind and go with Del and Kai to find us. My interactions with Byron were limited and weren't in the best circumstances, but I couldn't deny there was something about him that intrigued me. He had an authoritative aura that resembled Joaquin, but I felt like there was more to him that I couldn't see.

"Trust me when I say this, Byron will sooner or later come to us," Sabina said, sounding so sure of herself.

"What makes you say that?" Kao asked.

"Because he wouldn't have let you guys escape Kingsrose if he wasn't questioning Pierce's motives and actions."

Kao and I exchanged confused glances, not knowing what she meant by that. When we took off, Byron was nowhere in sight. I didn't see him during the altercations with the hunters, or with us.

"He wasn't around when we left," I said.

"He was," Sabina countered. "He was hiding in the shadows and given orders to intercept your vehicles and stop you from leaving. Instead, he just watched you guys leave without doing anything."

"He what?" Kao gasped.

"How do you know this?" I added, not quite believing what Sabina was saying, but if she was telling the truth, what made Byron not want to stop us? Kao said Byron was loyal to Pierce, yet from the sounds of it, he disobeyed a direct order. Was he seeing the error in Pierce's ways and deciding he can't support him anymore?

"I'll let Byron explain everything to you. If your friends really are going to retrieve Joaquin, chances are Byron will be going with them."

We sat in silence while I questioned whether Byron would find his way to us or not, and if he'd help us stop Pierce. If he did, it would give us a leg up. With Pierce down two of his best betas, we may have a chance at finally stopping Pierce from his conquest of getting the Wolf Moon's gift. Or it may push him over the edge and increase his search. Sooner or later, we'll have to face him again, and we've already established that neither of us are ready yet.

"This Joaquin, is he one of your mates?" Rowan asked me, breaking the silence.

"He is," I answered.

"Then hopefully he's still alive. If this Pierce guy kills him, then—"

"Then he steals Joaquin's connection to the Wolf Moon's gift. I know," I cut in. "If he kept Joaquin alive this long, then I don't think he knows about it."
