That was something I was trying to figure out myself. If Del and Kai did return with Joaquin, that was great. But what would our next step be? How much longer could we avoid Pierce before he came looking for us now that his two means of luring me to him were stripped from him. That was what Del wanted me to think about.
"I wish I had an answer for you," I finally said. "But you're right, we should come up with a plan soon. Pierce isn't going to give me up, not if it means taking the Wolf Moon's gift from me. Now that we know what it can do, we can't let it fall into his hands."
"I'm not just worried about Pierce getting the Wolf Moon's gift, Rosie. I'm worried about you." Kao wrapped his arms around my neck, pulling me to him so he could rest his chin on the top of my head. "Even if we stop Pierce, you heard what Rowan and Sabina said. There will be others who will come after you for your power. For as long as you have the gift, you'll always be targeted by greedy people in search of power."
"Which is why I'm glad I have three strong, capable, and loving mates who will watch over me. Are you still worried about not being strong enough?" I gripped the front of his muscle shirt, breathing in his woody scent and wishing that there was a way I could reassure him that he was enough, if that was what was bothering him again.
Kao didn't respond, but he didn't need to. I could feel it through our bond. "Kao—"
"I know what you're going to say," Kao quickly cut in. "And I get it, I need to stop being so hard on myself, but damn it, Rosie, I love you. The idea of something happening to you scares the hell out of me." His arms tightened their hold on me. "I mean, what happens if you're attacked and we're not around to protect you. What then?"
I pulled away so I could look up at the worried expression on his face. I wasn't sure if he forgot that part of the gift is inside him now, which meant soon enough, he'd be able to shift into his Lycan form. But if I brought that up, he may start panicking about something happening before he reached his Lycan form, if it would be enough to keep me safe. I loved that Kao didn't want to lose me, and I loved his desire to be strong enough to protect me, but he was once again putting all the burden on him, when we were a team. The two of us, plus Joaquin and Kai. He wouldn't have to do this alone.
"Kao, honey, I need to you listen to me, okay? You have to stop thinking the worst-case scenarios. Yes, I'll likely be targeted by others who want the Wolf Moon's gift but fearing the inevitable isn't going to change it. When the time comes, we'll be ready. Whatever happens, we'll deal with it together."
"I know I'm sounding paranoid," Kao admitted with a sigh. "I don't mean to be, I just... I wish there was more that I could do to protect you, is all. If I could put you in a giant bubble to protect you from the world, I would. I'd do it for Kai too. I couldn't do it for Joaquin, because... well, he'd likely kick my ass if I tried."
That got me to laugh, even though I felt the now familiar stabbing in my heart from hearing Joaquin's name. "I'll kick your ass too if you try to keep me in a bubble, got that?"
