“Do I know him?”

“I doubt it. He’s a professor or something.”

“Okay. Well, I’ll see you bright and early in the morning.” That rumble shoots across my belly again and I grimace.

“Are you alright?” She shoots me a suspicious look.

“I am. I’ve got to get home though.”

“The hotel you mean. That’s not your home.”

“It is for now. Until I can talk you into letting me move in with you.”

“We’ve only known each other a little over a week. Don’t be silly.”

“Time has no meaning when it comes to love.”

“Humph!” she snorts and picks up the pie.

“What are you doing with my pie?”

“Putting it in my fridge. I might try a piece later.”

“NO!” I scream, jumping across her when she tries to take a big bite. “I mean, no. I want to take it back and have it for dinner. It’s just so good.”

“If you’re sure?”

“Absolutely.” My cheeks pale when I think about eating more of the deadly concoction.

“That’s kind of greedy of you.”

“I’m a big guy. I need a lot of fuel.”

“Okay.” She eyes me critically. “You sure you’re alright? You look a little pale.

“Nothing a little pie won’t cure.”

I grab the thing and hurry out the door, pulling her in for a quick kiss. “I’ll see you later, baby girl.”

“Sure, Steele.”

Later that night, I wipe the sweat off my brow and glare at the offending dessert in the middle of the table.

“I hope I live to see tomorrow.” I groan when my belly ripples with pain again.

I didn’t want to hurt my girl’s feelings but her pie is deadly as hell. I’ve spent the day in the bathroom, swearing not to ever touch desserts again.

Or at least not my beautiful girl’s.

She may be many things including entrancing as hell but she can’t cook worth shit.

I groan and lay my head on the table. “Oh, god. I love you, baby.”

The next morning I feel almost brand new. Until I walk into the bookstore and see my girl laughing at a dark-haired man standing by the counter, leaning into her.
