All I got as response was Lock's chuckle. I could hear the background noise from the bar. "Raven, can you reduce the noise for me?"

There was no response from Kaya. I pressed my comms button again. "Raven, do you copy?"

Oh shit, what was wrong?

I hit my comms button again. "Raven, do you—"

"Copy,” she answered. “I just… interference."

Interference? What had gone wrong?

Saff's voice came over the line again. "Copy… position…"

Kaya interrupted. "Interference. Jamming… fix…"

Fuck. I had a button to call if something went wrong. Was this that moment? Sure, it was an emergency to me. Kaya was potentially in danger. I knew I was being monitored and if push came to shove, I could always call on Gabe, who would know what to do. But I needed to be the one to make the decision. "Team A, come in. Switch channels. Do you copy? Switch channels."

Suddenly, Kaya's voice came in loud and clear. "I got it. One of our antennae looks frayed."

I frowned at that. "What do you mean, frayed?"

"I got out of the van and climbed on top of it to check."

"You did what?" I growled.

"Saint, we don't have time for this. Heir, do you copy?"

Saffron came through. "Yes, now I copy. We are in position. Making my approach. Rook, do you copy?"

No response, but it was too late. Saffron approached the target, and I could hear the script we'd come up with. I could hear her going through it line by line and the target responding. On her worst day, Saff was stunning, so he was probably counting his lucky stars.

Lock played his role to a T. "Hey, she's my woman. What the hell are you doing?"

The other bloke tried to back up as Lock approached. There was a scuffle, and then Lock delivered one of two response calls. The primary was supposed to be, 'If you ever touch her again, I will sever you from your spine.' Theother one was, ‘Baby, come on. We're going home right now.’

He delivered the first, and I breathed a sigh of relief.

After that, Saff was supposed to apologize to the guy, tagging his skin with a tracker. Once they were out of the building and back in the comms van, he would get a phone call, requiring him to go outside in order to hear. His truck was parked out back, and when he moved, Rook was going to get him.

Saff's voice came over the line. "Target tagged."

Kaya responded. "Acknowledged. Rook, are you in position?"

Nothing came on the line.

"King, verify Rook's whereabouts." Kaya was calm and handling herself well.

Saffron reported that she was back in the comms van and Lock was checking on Rook.

What the fuck was Rook doing? What was he up to?

When Lock's voice came back online, his words were tight, like he was speaking through clenched teeth. "Mission abort. Mission abort. Rook has been taken."
