"Yeah, I'm fine. I'm great."

He nodded. "Yeah, sure. Seems like you really mean that."

"Of course, I mean it. I'm fine."

He laughed. "Okay, this is the part where you're going to tell me how it's going with Kaya."

"Nope. This is the part where you mind your fucking business."

The problem with Lachlan King was not just his cockiness, but the fucker acted like he knew everything. And he just loved to nail me.

King just laughed again. "So, trouble in paradise already?"

"Nope, I'm fine."

Tabatha Smith joined the two of us. "Will you two stop chatting away like a couple of gossipmongers? There's work to be done. We've got to practice for this rescue mission. Do your bullshitting on your own time."

I frowned. "Who's the team?"

"It's the three of us, Saff, and Rook."

I scowled.

Lachlan lifted a brow at me. "Rook is solid. A little brash, but he follows orders in the field. You know that."

"It's fine."

Tabatha stared at me as if I'd sprouted two heads. When she wandered off to find Saff so we could get started, Lock nudgedme. "What's the problem? You and Rook not getting along? Not one happy family?"

"I'm not playing happy family with him."

"Oh, you're sore, huh? How is that whole love situation going anyway? Kaya seems like a smart girl. She hasn't noticed anything untoward?"

I scowled at him. "I didn't give you any shit when you were pining away about Saff."

"Oh, lies. You almost had me believe that she was shagging her own brother. You're so full of shit."

I grinned. "Yeah, that’s fair. It was so easy though. I could have mentioned that they were siblings. But the way you kept eyeballing Gabe every time he was in the vicinity was hilarious. And that was just because he had a real hard-on for her protection."

He rolled his eyes. "So what's the problem with Kaya? Or are she and Rook getting along a little too well for your liking?"

"That little twat. Every time I turn around, there he is offering to help her with her homework having taken that class at university recently. And the way he just talks to her…"

"And are you the old man in the room? Is that the problem?"

I just barely resisted the urge to hurt him, and he laughed nefariously. "Mate, you should see your face. So, it's not just for show then?"

I frowned at him. "What do you mean?"

"Your little suggestion that you should provide protection by offering to marry her, at least for the cameras."

"It's more complicated than that."

"What is it?"

I sighed. "We don't have time to get into it right now."

Lachlan eyed me suspiciously. "However complicated it is, it’s probably because you didn't tell her the truth yet. You have that look on your face."
