After Saff was done with the briefing, Lock leaned over to me. "You didn't know about his family?"

I shook my head. "No. And why is his family living like that if he is so rich?"

Rook shook his head. "I have no idea. But we're going to pick him up and find out. And we’ll have someone new to interrogate."

"Mate, a woman and her kid?”

“If she's hiding him, that's aiding and abetting."

"You're going to interrogate a six-year-old? Do you hear yourself?" I asked. But I knew he had a point.

I sat back, closing my eyes. This was so fucked. But the need to protect Kaya was my only concern. Everyone else could fuck right off.

We landed in a field at the edge of the village in tall grass. Just beyond the tree line, we could see the twinkling lights of a high street. We moved with stealth down some alleyways to the cottage, staying out of sight.

If he was licking his wounds, it was here in this idyllic village. We all had our approach points. Rook and I were going straight and direct. Lock headed east. Saff headed west. Converging at all points toward the house.

And then Rook spoke in my comms. "If you fucking wanted her, why didn’t you just protect her in the beginning?"

"Shut your mouth."

"It's a valid question. You fucked her yet?"

I glowered at him. "Would you mind your goddamn business?"

"Unfortunately, you have made this my business. She's my damned assignment too."

"An assignment you seem to quite enjoy."

He sighed next to me. "Is she fit? Yeah. Is she smart? Hell, yes. And she smells like fucking summer. Unfortunately, I canalsosee the way she looks at you."

I shook my head at him. "Eyes on the prize. We have a mission."

In our ears, Lock agreed. "Yeah, eyes on the prize. Besides, if you cunts are going to gossip at least wait for me."

Saffron laughed. "Oi, you lot shut the fuck up. Stay focused."

We crossed the street easily enough and approached the cottage.

Then we did a quick scan for explosives, booby traps, anything.

When we didn't find any, Rook and I advanced quietly. From the outside, the door looked like something out ofSnow White. Arched doorway, painted red, set in the stone of the cottage. But it had a heavy-duty security lock on it. One with what was apparently a six-figure combination.

Rook bent down and took out a device. "I know you're not particularly thrilled about me being on this mission, but at least I have use."

I ignored him.

"Could you do this?"

Once again, I ignored him.

He sighed but then worked his magic. It took several seconds, but eventually the lock turned green. And then he scrambled back.

In my comms, Lock muttered. "King in position. Ready."

Saff responded. "Heir in position. Ready."

I responded. "Rook and Saint in position. Ready."
