“Sarah!”

“Last one, I promise. Now close your eyes.” I snort out a laugh but do as she asks. She puts something in my hand. It’s rectangular in shape as though it’s packaged. Perfume maybe? “Open.” She laughs as I open my eyes to find a packet of condoms.

“Oh, Sarah, as if,” I chide, shoving her so she falls back on my bed.

She laughs hysterically as she smiles at me. “It’s better to be safe than sorry.” I roll my eyes, throw the packet on the bed and stand to get ready. “Let’s get you into that new dress.” Sarah jumps up from the bed, pulls the dress off the hanger, and hands it to me. She helps me into it while trying not to ruin my hair and makeup. Once fully dressed, Sarah stands there simply staring at me.

My stomach flips in nerves. “What? No good?” I ask, concerned.

“No… you look stunning.” Sarah pulls out her phone and snaps a picture. “Say… I’m sexy, and I know it!”

I laugh, and she snaps the photo. As it turns out, it’s a nice one, and she sends it to Chris. A few moments later, Chris replies, and Sarah shows me the message.

Chris: Fuck! She looks beautiful. Tell her to have fun.

“What a sweetheart,” I beam, meaning it.

“I know, right?”

I take a final look in the mirror, and I’m happy with the results. Even I think I look pretty.

“Right, ten minutes. Last-minute checks. Teeth?” I smile. “Check… handbag?” I hold it up in my hand. “Check… shoes?” I look down.

“Oh crap, what shoes should I wear?” I ask as I stand here in my bare feet.

“I can’t believe we didn’t think about this! How about my black heels? They’re low and have little bling buckles. They’ll match your bracelet and belt.”

I grimace, craning my neck. “Isn’t that a bit too much bling?”

Sarah scoffs, shaking her head at my obvious stupidity. “There’s no such thing as too much bling.”

I laugh as she goes to her room to retrieve her shoes. When she returns, I hold onto her arm to step into them. They’re a little higher than I normally wear, so I walk around the bedroom trying to get used to the height. Sarah watches me intently. “You’ll be fine. You’re having dinner, so you will be sitting at a table most of the time.”

“They do look amazing,” I gush as the doorbell chimes, interrupting my admiration of the shoes. “Holy fuck,” I whisper.

“Don’t panic. You look perfect.”

My breath suddenly becomes short even though Sarah told me not to panic. “I don’t think I can do this.” A flash of heat washes over my entire body as I start to fan myself with my hands.

“Yes, you can. You’re a strong, passionate, beautiful young woman. I’m certain you can handle something as simple as a date.”

“This isn’t just a date, Sarah. I haven’t been around a guy I’ve been interested in since…”

She grabs my hand in hers. “Stop. We’re not thinking of him tonight, or ever again, you hear me?”

I take in a deep, steadying breath. “Okay,” I let out a long breath. “Should I answer the door, or should you?”

Sarah grins a little too whimsically. “I’ll answer the door and say, ‘she’ll be right with you.’ Then you can walk down the hallway making a grand entrance, then he’ll sweep you off your feet and kiss you,” she says excitedly, like this is the retelling of some fairy-tale romance.

I smirk and look at her sideways. “Okaaay… I’m answering the door, then.”

She frowns like I just sold her puppy. “My idea’s better.”

I laugh, walking to the front door, closely stalked by Sarah. As I reach my destination, I turn around, patting down my dress. “Well?” I ask for the final once-over.

She looks at me in all seriousness and answers with one simple word, “Amazing.”

Exhaling, I turn and open the front door. Standing in the doorway is Aiden’s chauffeur.
