But maybe it was time to stop seeing that as my only worth to the club. Stop taking all these fucking side jobs where no one had my back.

It’s okay to lean on other people who care about you.

Clearly, that was proving more true with each passing day too.

But I was still going to go back and let Ama do what Ama has always done for me.

Be a light.

A little bit of softness.

The only love I’d ever known.

Even if all we did now was snap at each other.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Amaranta

“Stone,” Christian called, making me look over from the chart I was putting notes in.

“Yeah?”

“There’s a patient in exam two who claims not to know how he was impaled in the stomach four times,” he told me, giving me a raised brow. “Funnily enough, his chart also says he was accidentally punctured by a sharp object,” he went on.

“Really? What an interesting case,” I said, pretending like my stomach wasn’t flip-flopping. Or, at least, trying to tell myself that it was flip-flopping because of possibly getting in trouble for, well, fraud, instead of because Seeley came back.

Of course he did.

I mean, this was Seeley we were talking about.

I wasn’t sure I’d ever met anyone as true to their word as he was.

Well, except…

No.

Nope.

I wasn’t going there.

“And, somehow, this impaling has nothing to do with that one-percent badge on his chest,” Christian said, brow raised.

“How could a accidental impaling have anything to do with a patch on his chest?” I asked.

“I said badge,” he said, smirking. “Interesting, but astute, correction.”

“Hey, what are you doing here anyway, breathing down my neck?” I asked. “Did you run out of rich patients over there in Billionaires Row?”

“I forgot my briefcase here last night,” he said. “Then when I came in, someone in the waiting room had a leg jerk. I thought it might actually be a hypnic jerk which would have been very interesting since he was awake. Turns out, he just has a tic. Boring,” he said, sighing.

“After that, your temp nurse just figured I was working, and shooed me into the biker’s room.”

“Well, you’re free to leave now. I’ve got it from here,” I assured him, trying to seem cool and collected even though some part of me was practically bouncing at the idea of going into Seeley’s room.

“I’ll bet you do,” he said, smirking. “Just know I wholly approve of defrauding the shitty medical system you are trying to work within the confines of. But I feel like, now that I know you enough to give a shit if you die or not, that I should advise you to be careful about getting involved with criminals too often.”

“You are capable of giving a shit?” I asked, pressing a hand to my heart in mock shock.
