“Okay. Good. That’s… I mean, fucking none of this is good. But that’s as good as we could hope for, right?”

“Right,” she agreed, nodding.

“How long will she be in surgery?” I asked.

“That’s hard to say. A few hours, typically. Then she will need to be in recovery for a while.”

“After that, I can see her?”

“What is your relation to Dr. Stone?” she asked, and something about the way she raised her brows at me made me think she was urging me to lie.

“I’m her… brother,” I said. “Different dads,” I added in case someone wanted my identification.

“Well, then, of course you can see her,” she said, and her smile said she knew we weren’t related. “I like Dr. Stone,” she added. “She’s doing good work.”

“Yeah, she is,” I agreed.

“We will be taking good care of her, so she can get back to that.”

With that, the doctor moved off, leaving me standing there, feeling shaky from the adrenaline, fear, and worry, and the heady dose of relief at knowing she was going to be okay.

“Hey,” Cato’s voice called, making me turn to find not only him and Levee there, but a disheveled-looking Arty as well, our friendly local hacker with a caffeine addiction and an aversion to cleaning his apartment.

“She’s in surgery, but is going to be alright,” I explained.

“Good. That’s great,” Cato said.

“I need to know what happened,” I told them, exhaling hard.

“That’s why we got Arty here out of bed. Can you believe it? He was actually sleeping,” Levee said. “I almost feel bad for getting him up.”

“Did you find anything out?” I asked.

“She was at the clinic,” Arty explained. “It was supposed to be closed for the night, so no one knows why she was there. The cop made a comment about her not being dressed for work, too.”

“She probably forgot something,” I said, shrugging.

“Well, it seems like she interrupted a robbery,” Cato explained.

“Another one? What the fuck?” I barked, apologizing to the lady a few chairs away that I made jump.

“It is a bad area,” Levee reminded me.

“The cops are suspecting it might be the same guy who broke in and shot that other nurse,” Arty said. “If he got drugs once, he would try to do it again. Especially since they didn’t add any new security features.”

“Can you get on it?” I asked. “The three of you,” I clarified. “I need to know who the fucker is,” I added, and all three of them knew exactly what I was talking about.

“Yeah, man, we will hit the streets,” Cato said, nodding.

“You need anything else?” Levee asked.

“Sea salt caramel chocolate,” I said. “And a book.”

“What book?” Levee asked.

“Literally any new release book. She just… likes books.”

I’m not picky. I just like to escape into a new world for a while.
