“Chocolates and books. Got it,” Levee said. “I’ll snag those first, drop them off, then Cato and I will head out.”

“Thank you,” I said, meaning it. They always had my back. Even when my shit had nothing to do with them.

They left then, leaving me to pace near the doors of the emergency room.

Which was exactly how I saw him when he came in.

Dr. Christian Laurier.

Yeah, I fucking looked him up.

I had absolutely no boundaries, it seemed, when it came to my jealousy toward anyone who got to be in Ama’s life.

“She’s in surgery,” I said when he looked toward the triage nurse.

“What?” he asked, looking at me.

“Amaranta. She’s in surgery,” I explained.

“I know you,” he said, squinting at me.

“No, you don’t.”

“Yes, I do,” he said, looking me over. “And those bloodstains through your shirt say I’m remembering just fine. You shouldn’t be bleeding still.”

“Yeah, well, I probably shouldn’t have ridden my bike here,” I said, shrugging.

“You… know Dr. Stone?”

“I’m her emergency contact,” I explained. “How did you know she was here?”

“The cops,” he explained.

“She has a concussion, a broken arm, and a laceration to the neck that sounds like it was… close.”

To that, Dr. Laurier let out a curse.

“We need better security over there.”

“Yeah, no shit,” I said, making his brows raise and his lips twitch.

“Though, she was there after hours.”

“This is Ama we’re talking about. If she was there, she probably just forgot her phone or some shit like that.”

“I’m sure that is the case, but it doesn’t mean it wasn’t reckless.”

“Ama is from that neighborhood,” I explained. “She’s not some rich doctor driving around in a hundred-grand car.”

“She could be.”

“She doesn’t want to be. She wants to help the community. And maybe she trusts them too much, but that doesn’t mean she’s to blame for what happened.”

Even after I found this fucker and made him pay, maybe it was time for me to throw my weight around the neighborhood again, let everyone know that Dr. Stone was untouchable.

Hell, if I wanted to, I was sure I could team up with other organizations around the area who had benefited from Ama’s special kind of emergency care.

All I knew was this was never going to fucking happen again.
