“From the sounds of things, she’s important to you. So that means she’s important to us. And when someone who is important to us is down, they get some food. That’s how love works,” Eddie claimed.

I knew that, when I joined the club, they would become something of a family to me. But for someone who really had no family growing up, at least not in the way that you were supposed to, it had been an adjustment for me.

I knew I could rely on them, but still felt the need to prove myself, to earn my place in their lives.

And while I understood that we had each other’s backs, it was harder for me to wrap my head around the fact that they all genuinely did see us as a family.

The women helped create that feeling.

But, in my opinion, it was Eddie who was really driving it home for those of us who had strained family bonds.

“I really appreciate that,” I told him, meaning it. “And Ama likes all kinds of comfort foods. The only thing she really isn’t a fan of is seafood. Oh, and that shit that tastes like soap…”

“Cilantro,” Eddie supplied. “It only tastes like soap to some people. But, nah, man, I didn’t use that. Or fish. Just lots of carbs and cheese. The kinda stuff that feels like a warm hug when you eat it. Just let me know when’s a good time to bring it over.”

“Actually,” I said, thinking. “What do you have going on tonight?” I asked.

“You mean tonight while you all have your super secret meeting that I know nothing about?”

“Yeah, then,” I said, laughing.

“Nothing, man. Figured I’d fiddle with my car or some shit.”

“How about instead of that, you come and babysit Ama for me?”

“She know you’re offering that? ‘Cause I don’t think the ladies like strange men in their places.”

“Strange men carrying mashed potatoes and mac & cheese might be the exception,” I told him. “I just don’t want to leave her alone. With this asshole on the loose still, but also because she’s bad about knowing her limits.”

“Alright. Yeah, I’d be happy to, man. Just shoot me the address.”

With that, I did.

Then picked up the scripts, and made my way back to her apartment.

Where I found her in bed.

Still in the robe.

Or, well, partially in the robe.

She seemed like she passed out the second she hit the bed. And Ama was a bit of a restless sleeper at times, so the damn robe had parted. And I was seeing way more than I could handle right then.

Trying to find some self-control, I reached for the blanket, and started to pull it up over her body.

“Seeley?” her voice called, soft and sweet with sleep.

“Go back to sleep,” I told her.

But then her free hand was reaching for mine, pulling me down at her side.

I should have moved away.

I should have been a better man.

But I climbed in beside her.
