Page 25 of Taking the Fight

“What the hell?” I said, glancing over at the TV where it showed everything blocked off with tape. The police and rescue crews were searching through the rubble.

“They’re looking for two more bodies,” Carter revealed.

My chest tightened and I focused back on him; I couldn’t watch that shit anymore. “I have no words.”

Carter leaned over on his elbows. “I take it things are going well with you and Reagan? She stayed here last night.”

“Yeah, I was out cold for all of it,” I grumbled. “We have a lot to talk about. Shit just keeps getting in our way.”

He smirked. “You have today.”

Scoffing, I unscrewed the cap off my water. “No, the fuck we don’t.” I guzzled down the cold liquid.”

“Why not?”

I finished the rest of my water and sighed. “Because I have a date.”

Carter’s mouth gaped. “You can’t be serious? What the hell were you thinking?”

“Oh, don’t worry,” I pinged back, “Reagan has one too. It’s my date’s brother. We’ll all be together tonight at some charity ball.”

He shook his head. “I swear. I thought mine and Emma’s relationship was complicated in the beginning. You and Reagan have us beat.”

Getting up, I tossed my bottle in the trash and leaned against the refrigerator. “Tell me about it. The guy she’s going with is an arrogant douche. So now I have to watch him parade her around all fucking night.”

Carter smiled. “And she has to watch you with the sister. Just keep your anger in check.”

“Easier said than done,” I grunted out.

He blew out a sigh. “I understand that.”

The front door opened, and I looked over to see Emma walk in with Reagan behind her, both carrying bags of food. Reagan’s crystal blue eyes met mine and she held up her bag, giving me that sexy smile of hers. She had her caramel-blonde hair braided to the side, which was a style I’ve always liked, and she wore a pair of shorts that showed off her perfectly tanned legs.

“I got your favorite,” she said to me. “Hope you’re hungry.”

My stomach growled. “Starved.” For more than just food. I walked over to the kitchen table where she and Emma set everything down. “Can we talk for a minute?” Emma smiled and winked at her before joining Carter in the kitchen.

Reagan rolled her eyes at her sister and nodded at me. “Sure.” But then she gasped and fumbled around in her purse. “Oh wait, I have something for you.” She pulled out a rectangular white box and handed it to me; it was a brand-new phone. “I figured you would sleep all day, so I went ahead and got you that.”

“What would I do without you?” I spoke.

She winked. “You’d be lost.”

I nodded toward the hallway. “That’s for damn sure. Do you mind coming to the bedroom with me?”

Reagan cleared her throat. “Sure. There are some things we need to discuss.” Her smile faded, and her demeanor shifted to something more serious. I didn’t like the change. She followed me down the hall to my room, and I shut the door behind us.

“What’s going on?” I asked her.

Reagan walked over to my window, keeping her back to me as she peered out at the ocean. “Annika wanted me to tell you to call her. I told her this morning you still didn’t have a phone.”

“Even if I did, I still wouldn’t.”

Reagan turned and stared back at me with pursed lips. “Don’t be like that.”

“I thought you didn’t want her around me?”

She snorted. “I don’t, but she has a lot going on in her life. That’s why I was hoping to talk to you about tonight.”
