Chapter 1

Nicola

I was finally done with my shift at the hospital. Now I could relax and enjoy the perfect spring weather. I hated the long shifts being a doctor entailed but at least it allowed me to enjoy things like my new convertible.

My mother had frowned when she saw it and accused me of the greatest of sins in her ever-praying heart. The sin of gluttony, also known as having your cake and eating it too. I figured if I had to live a life I was rarely happy in, the least I could enjoy was a little cake.

Smiling at my thoughts, I grinned even wider as I loved how this machine handled the curves on this winding road. I wasn’t traveling very fast, as I tried to be cautious with all the power at my disposal, especially since the turns were so tight. I slowed down a bit more for the next turn when I saw a school bus rounding the curve coming the other way.

I gasped as I realized it was half in my lane. My heart rate stuttered nervously as i moved onto the shoulder. It was then that I saw out of the corner of my eye a bicyclist on the side of the road, right in front of me. “Shit,” I muttered loudly as I quickly started to pray I could miss both of them. I held my breath, as I missed the bus.

I wasn’t in the clear yet, and then I heard a slight thud as I passed the bike. I quickly looked in the mirror, nearly in a panic. As I saw the cyclist tumbling head over heels then stopping in a heap alongside the road my heart stopped. “No, no, no,” I begged the powers above me as I hit my breaks and slid to a stop off the road.

Quickly, I turned off the engine and jumped from the car and ran back to the cyclist. He was sitting up now, and I felt my heart stutter to a start as I realized I hadn’t killed him like I feared. "Are you hurt badly?”

I looked into his sky blue eyes set in a very handsome tanned face. Blood ran from a cut above one eye and he was holding his left leg. The knee was bleeding and the toe of the sneaker was shredded. He was covered with dirt, grass, and bits of trash.

"Where do you hurt? I’m a Doctor,” I explained to the handsome man. He looked at me with a stunned gaze. Without meaning to turn a serious situation into something that was funny, a slight grin tried to force its way onto my face as I saw cartoon birds spinning around his head.

About that time the school bus driver ran up asking, "How is he?”

"I haven’t had a chance to properly examine him but I think he’ll live. I see nothing life threatening."

The man on the ground looked at her. He grinned, showing white teeth with a trace of blood on them. "Beautiful lady, this is an erotic dream, right?"

“Not quite,” I returned his smile as I held his wrist and checked his pulse. Surprised, I took the pulse a second time. It wasn’t very elevated and given the situation he was rather calm, maybe even too calm.

I looked at him more carefully now, wanting to make sure he wasn’t going into shock. Blood ran into his eye from a cut on the brow. He had bloody spots on his shirt and on his legs. The worst injuries I could see were the left knee and his toes. "How do you feel?" I asked as I checked his neck and ribs.

"Not too bad, my left foot hurts pretty bad, other than that only minor pain."

I pressed on his eyebrow and the trickle of blood stopped. I looked at the bus driver. "Here, put your finger on this while I get my bag." I ran back to her car, pulled off my heels and slipped on a pair of flats I had in the back seat. I grabbed a medical bag that I always kept in my car and ran back.

The man on the ground smiled at her, "I loved your little heels."

I smiled back with a small giggle, "Thank you.” Putting on gloves I started to examine him for any broken bones or possible internal injuries. The cuts themselves looked superficial. Even his toes appeared more bruised and scraped up than broken.

With a sigh of relief I shined my pin light in and out of his eyes before sitting back with a sigh of relief. “You look a lot less dazed. Cell phones don't work here and the nearest paramedics are ten miles away. I’d prefer not to treat your injuries here. If you’re ok with it, let me take you to my house and get you cleaned and patched up in a much more sterile environment. Then we can see if you need stitches for any of these cuts. Is that okay with you?"

"Sounds good to me, let me get up and see if I can walk.” The bus driver and I helped him up and got him to my car. He looked at my car and grimaced before looking at me and saying, "I'm not getting in there and ruining those beautiful white leather seats with blood."

“Leather is really easy to clean,” I replied. "Go ahead."

"No, do you have an old towel or blanket in the trunk?"

"Hey, yes I do." I ran around and opened the trunk. Grabbing the blanket, I quickly came running back with a blanket that I spread over the seat. With our help, he gingerly slipped onto the seat before I closed the door.

Turning around, I smiled gratefully at the bus driver. “I’m Dr. Nicola Waller. Here’s my card.”

As he handed me his information he said, "Ma’am, it wasn’t your fault, I was out of my lane and in yours to keep from hitting a deer. I'll stand up for you in court."

"Thank you very much. We will have to see how things work out but hopefully it won’t come to that for any of us. I promise, I'll be in touch, though. Thank you so much for stopping and helping."

I quickly walked back to the car and paused as I looked at the damaged bicycle at the side of the road. I knew it wouldn’t fit in my car and the man was first priority. Climbing in the driver's seat, I started my car as I said to my passenger, “I know your bike is seriously damaged. I’ll pay for a new one and arrange to get this one picked. I’m so sorry that I hit you.”

“That’s very kind of you. It was a dangerous situation so I feel lucky just to have some minor injuries.” The man looked over at me before introducing himself. "My name is Callum Murphy the Third to be exact. Most people call me Cal."

"Are you related to Dr. Callum Murphy?"
