Bexley looks worried. “Grayson said he’d get you back to the hotel in one piece. You looked like you were having fun. Was everything okay? Did he try anything?”

He proposed!

“Of course he tried something,” Shae cuts in with a laugh. “He’s Mase Stirling.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I demand.

“Look at how quickly he goes through women. And the paternity thing with Emelia.”

“Have you ever talked to him about how women treat him? I think it must be difficult to be Mase Stirling—everyone wanting a piece of him. You know as well as I do women can be brutal. How many of them are just out to use him?”

All eyes are on me and I feel my cheeks flush.

“Aren’t we Team Mase?” Shae leans back to study me. “Doesn’t seem like he finds it a hardship.”

“It can’t be easy for him,” I insist. In for a penny, in for a pound. “Being the centre of attention all the time, dealing with his family. That’s got to be so tough—having so many expectations and duties. And that’s not even the baseball stuff. And what about…” I trail off. “We talked a bit last night,” I finish defensively. “He’s nice.”

“He’s very nice,” Rachel agrees. “Hot as sin, too. Just the way I like them.”

“Don’t let Boen hear you talk like that,” Demi points out.

“Boen knows I love him best of all,” Rachel announces. “But I like Mase. He seems like a good guy.”

“He was nothing but a gentleman last night.” This morning was another story, but they don’t need to know that. “There was nothing inappropriate going on. He took me home. Got me back to the hotel,” I correct. “He was great. I mean, we had a lot of fun.”

Bexley cocks her head. “Really? You didn’t seem that impressed when you first met him.”

“That was before I got to know him. He’s…kind of amazing.”

But she’s still not convinced. “Well, it was one night. Don’t go falling in love with him because Grayson says he’ll break your heart.”

“I don’t think he’d do that.”

But Bexley has moved on, laughing with Rachel and posing for Shae. Tonight will be filmed for an episode of The Suitor, and the cameraperson, a dark-haired woman who seems oblivious to everything but her camera, looms before us.

Not only do I have to lie to my best friend, I have to do it all on camera as well.

We’re here to celebrate Bexley’s engagement and here I am, concerned with my own secrets.

I’m married to Mase Stirling and I can’t tell a soul.

So instead of telling my best friend there’s no way Mase can break my heart since he’s making me so happy, I hug my secret to myself like a child’s security blanket, and wonder if Bexley will eventually figure out something has changed within me.

Shae is the only one who seems to know where we’re going. Mase gave her an envelope of tickets with instructions to dress in our ‘sexy best’ and told us to have fun.

Rachel takes Bexley by the hand and tugs her away to follow Chrissa and Shae, leaving me with Demi and Biba. I like Demi and Biba, but there’s a pang of loneliness as I watch Bexley blend seamlessly into a friendship with Rachel.

It’s not that I don’t want her to make friends, especially with Boen’s new girlfriend, but I can’t help but feel a little left out.

The lineup at the door snakes around the building, but Shae—on more instructions from Mase—talks to the doorman, who lifts the black velvet rope for us. “Does he own this place, too?” Bexley marvels as we file in.

It really wouldn’t surprise me if he did.

The club is huge with clusters of tables and a wide stage at the front of the space. “Is this some kind of show?” Demi asks.

‘“Tower of Power,’” Biba reads the banner hanging above the stage.

“We need to sit real close.” Shae ushers us to two tables in the front. Almost immediately, a very handsome man, wearing tight black pants and nothing else, arrives to take our drink order.
