We entered the bathroom, which was the size of my living room and smelled of expensive cologne. She sat on a fluffy chair as I dabbed ointment on the wound then bandaged it for her.

As we stepped out of the bathroom, she asked, “Can I offer you a drink?”

“Just tonic water will do,” I said.

She inclined her head. “We’ve got plenty of Gin.”

I smiled. “I’m sure you do. But no, just tonic, thanks.”

She looked disappointed. “Okay, then.” She poured herself a big hit of spirit with a small amount of tonic. I already knew Savanah was a lush, so that didn’t surprise me. I’d also been known to hit it hard in the past—that was why I’d become a moderate drinker.

Passing me a drink, she wore the makings of a flirty smile.

During the time that I’d known her, Savanah hadn’t hidden her interest. If she weren’t my best friend’s sister, I would have propositioned her. She was the most beautiful girl I’d ever seen. But she seemed to think she could snap her fingers and get what she wanted. Hot body and gorgeous face aside, that kind of entitled attitude made me grumpy. Sure, I had a weakness for long-legged, slender women, and I was a sucker for big blue eyes. But I liked my women down-to-earth, and the less makeup, the better.

I waited until she sat down with her drink. “So tell me, what exactly happened?”

“We were jumped by a street gang.”

“By ‘we’ you mean a friend?”

“I was with Ollie. My boyfriend.”

“Your boyfriend?” My eyes widened. “Where’s he?”

“Great fucking question.” She gulped her drink. “He ran away and left me to fight them off. Can you believe it?”

“He’s a piece of shit then, isn’t he?” I shook my head in disgust.

“They just came out of nowhere.”

“They didn’t take your phone, though.”

“No, they chased him instead. So I’m not sure what happened to Ollie.” She flicked a dark strand away from her face. “I’m kinda worried about him. But he shouldn’t have left me there.”

“You got that right.” I couldn’t believe a man doing that to his girlfriend—or any woman, for that matter. “And then they cut you?”

She nodded as her lip quivered on the rim of the glass. “They stole my jewellery and credit cards. That’s after I put up a fight, but then they flashed a knife and cut me on the arm, and I gave them everything.”

“It’s okay. You’re safe now. This sort of thing happens all too often.”

“Yeah. I know. It happened one night when I was with Dusty. Only Dusty defended me. Not like spineless Ollie.”

“Introduce me one of these days, and I’ll be sure to give him a lesson on where to find his balls.”

Her mouth curled slightly. “There’ll be no next time. I’m dropping him.”

“Can’t say I blame you there.”

After finishing her drink, she rose and stretched her arms. “Bed, I suppose. Do you mind staying while I have a quick shower?” Her eyebrow arched.

“Okay. Sure.” I reached over and picked up a Sotheby’s auction catalogue and flicked through the pages, staring at pretty pictures of art and objects that were as far from my world as Ikea was for the super-rich.

She came out in a dressing gown, and I rose off the leather couch. “I best be off, then.”

Her face lit up with alarm. “No, stay. Please.”

I looked down at my watch. It was four o’clock. “I’ve just got to make a call.”
