Adam picked up his phone and started dialling. “Okay, well, I’ll give you a four-hour head start.”

I scrunched up my nose. “Huh?”

“That’s how long it will take from the moment this call connects, to the moment Grayson is back in New York chasing down your ass.”

My mouth dropped. “You wouldn’t…”

He lifted the phone to his ear with a smirk. “Grayson, hi.”

“Fuck,” I said, and sprinted out the door.

Hurrying back home, I picked up the bags I’d spent the last few days packing and dropped them at my door, ready to escape as soon as my cab arrived.

“Whoa, what’s the rush? Your plane isn’t leaving for another six hours,” Amy said as she finished carrying in the rest of her things.

“Oh, you know me. Just eager to start my next adventure.” I smiled a little too forcefully.

Amy narrowed her eyes. “Oookay…well, you still haven’t introduced me to this neighbour of yours.”

“Oh crap, let’s do that now.” I grabbed her hand, pulled her down the stairs and knocked on his door.

“Hang on,” Reed called out as loud gunfire erupted within his apartment.

Amy’s eyes grew wide. “What is he doing in there?”

“He’s an online gamer,” I said, tapping my foot.

She scrunched up her nose. “That’s a thing?”

The door flew open. “Yeah, it’s a thing,” Reed said, dropping his headpiece around his neck.

Amy’s eyes fluttered as she looked over Reed, who stood before us, shirtless and dishevelled. Her cheeks grew pink.

I muffled a giggle. “Reed, this is Amy. She’ll be staying in my apartment while I’m overseas. Amy, this is Reed. He can help you out with Luci when he gets too much.”

They both uttered hellos and stood there, silently admiring each other.

I clapped my hands together to draw their attention. “Well, now that’s done, Amy can you help me bring my bags down?”

“Oh, I don’t mind helping,” Reed intercepted, closing the door behind him.

“But what about your game?” I asked, guiltily.

He threw a sideways glance at Amy. “There’ll be others.”

“You’ve been holding out on me,” Amy whispered as we tailed him up the stairs.

I giggled. Reed was exactly Amy’s type. A little nerdy, and a whole lot of sexy. I didn’t need to be psychic to know they were going to have fun together.

Saying goodbye to Luci was the hardest thing. He jumped around excitedly, without a clue I’d be disappearing from his life for an undetermined period of time. He licked away my tears as I assured him he was in good hands, and then bounded away. Peering up at Amy and Reed, I found them making googly eyes at each other and groaned. I’d become the third wheel in my own apartment.

I gave Reed a hug goodbye, before Amy walked me out to my waiting cab.

“Please don’t break my bed,” I said, with a knowing smirk.

Amy laughed and shrugged. “We’ll try not to.”

My laughter faded as the cab driver closed the trunk, signalling he was ready to go.
