“Look after yourself, Josie,” she said, turning serious.

“I will.”

She pulled me in for a hug. “One day, you’ll let someone else do it for you.”

“Well until then, I’ve got all I need.” I held up my passport and camera bag, with a cheesy grin, and slid into the cab.

As I sat in the airport terminal with only two hours left before take-off, my leg bounced up and down incessantly. For the fiftieth time, I rose from my chair to check the schedule of incoming flights from LA. The next one wasn’t for a few hours, so I breathed a sigh of relief.

“Funny thing about private jets, they can take off and land anytime, anyplace.”

I jumped out of my skin and whirled around to the voice that made my heart swell. “Grayson…what are you doing here?”

He raised an eyebrow. “I was going to ask you the same thing.”

“I…I’m heading to Europe.” My jaw twitched. “Like I always planned.”

Grayson pursed his lips. “And when did you plan on telling me?”

“Look, it’ll be better for the both of us to just let this…this thing…go.”

“This thing?” Irritation flickered through his expression.

“That’s all it is…a passing infatuation that was never meant to last.” Pain speared through my chest.

His hard stare penetrated mine. “Why do you keep lying to yourself?”

Struggling to breathe, I lowered my gaze. “Our worlds are too different, Gray. I need to leave before…” My voice trailed off as I faced my underlying fears.

“Before what?” he uttered, impatiently. “Before we’ve even had a chance?”

My eyes filled with tears as I lifted them to meet his. “Before you leave me.”

“Jos…” He stepped forward. “I don’t plan on leaving you…ever.”

“Well, things don’t always go to plan,” I muttered, folding my arms.

“No, they don’t,” he said, shaking his head. “I never planned on meeting you, and you’re the best goddamn thing to ever happen to me.”

I scowled. “Don’t say things like that.”

“Like what?”

I huffed. “Don’t make this harder than it needs to be.”

He chuckled. “So I shouldn’t say things like…I miss you so much it hurts?”

“Exactly that,” I cried, turning away from him.

“Then I definitely shouldn’t say I think you’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, and I think I’m dreaming every morning I wake up next to you.”

My breath hitched. “Please stop.”

“What about…I love you and plan to marry you, just as soon as you’ll let me?”
