I trailed after him into Grayson’s office, but as soon as we walked through the door, Adam’s pace slowed. Assuming he was scanning the room for the gifts, I pointed to the floor next to the desk and manoeuvred around his stationary frame to pick them up.

As I began piling them into my arms, I glanced up to find Adam staring at me.

“I was actually wondering if I could speak to you privately for a moment,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck.

I smiled in relief. Grayson must’ve spoken to him. “Yes, I was hoping we’d have a chance to talk.”

His eyes lit up as he stepped closer. “Or we could just skip the talking part.”

Before I knew it, his mouth was pressing against mine.

“Don’t forget to grab th—” Was all I heard before Adam’s lips were torn away, and I was stumbling backwards and dropping presents all over the floor.

Grayson grabbed Adam’s shirt and threw him against the wall, eyeballing his older brother with a clenched jaw. “I told you not to fucking touch her.”

“Fuck, Gray, what’s wrong with you?” he yelled, shoving him off. “It’s a Christmas party, loosen the fuck up.”

My mouth dropped open. “You didn’t tell him?!”

Adam narrowed his eyes as they darted between us. “Tell me what?”

Grayson rubbed his hand down his face and hung his head. “Josie and I…we’re together.”

“What?” he spat, stepping backwards.

Grayson peered up at Adam and swallowed. “We’re…a couple.”

“Since when?!” His forehead creased. “When Mom questioned me about the woman you were seeing, I assumed it was…wait.” His face dropped. “That girl in your apartment, in your shower…that was her?” He moved his eyes to me. “That was you?”

I nodded reluctantly, my face burning.

Adam pursed his lips and pulled his fiery gaze back to his brother. “Why didn’t you tell me, Gray? Or were you enjoying watching me make a fool out of myself?”

I stepped forward, feeling horrible. “Adam, we had no inten—”

“That’s Mr. Harlow to you!” he barked, making me flinch.

“Adam…” Grayson warned, moving between us. “I’m sorry you had to find out this way, but I won’t let you speak to her like that.”

“What? Am I supposed to treat her differently to the rest of the staff, just because you’re fucking her?”

“No, I expect you to treat her with the respect she deserves.”

He shook his head with a laugh. “I can’t wait to see you explain this one to Mom and Dad, not to mention Mel.”

Grayson pinched the bridge of his nose and groaned.

With an amused snort, Adam turned my way. “You know he’s supposed to marry Melanie Warren, don’t you? This thing between the two of you, it won’t last.”

Grayson exhaled. “What the fuck are you doing, Adam?”

“Saving her the grief,” he muttered before storming out of the room, leaving behind an unsettling silence.

I lowered my stinging eyes. “Well, that went well,” I mumbled, picking up the presents I dropped.

“I’m sorry, he’s just—”

“Can we just get back to the party?” I interrupted, hiding my face behind the pile of gifts sitting precariously in my arms.
