“Well, I ain’t dead yet.” She smiles at me.

“This is him, he’s giving you this shit.”

“Does it answer your original question, Nyx?” she responds, her eyes barely able to focus on me.

“You need to stop this shit right now, Abby. Ella needs you.”

Abby giggles hysterically loud and drags both her hands through her hair in frustration.

“That’s all you give a shit about, isn’t it, Nyx? Perfect Ella Jackson. Daddy’s precious girl. You know why Luke Robinson was such an asshole to her?”

I ignore her for a second, bursting into the en-suite bathroom and starting up the shower. Then I head back to her room and lift up her weightless body, carrying her to the bathroom and shoving her under the water still fully clothed.

“He hated her because he wants her,” she taunts me. The water catching in her throat as she speaks.

“Why did you betray her?” I grip at the girl’s hair and force her to look at me.

“Luke gave me what she couldn’t,” she slurs.

“You're a mess.” I release her. Standing back and trying to figure out what I’m gonna do about this.

“Who gives a fuck. My parents don’t care about me. They didn’t even stick around to watch me graduate. I’m not pretty like Ella, I don’t have the Captain of the football team's attention, or the new bad boy at school obsessed with me. I’ve got nothing, Nyx.” Looking at her now, I kinda feel sorry for her. How could someone change so much in such a short time. Abby was so bright.

“You owe me, Nyx. I lied and I got you off the hook. I did what that crazy bitch told me to do. You need to get me some shit because I'm all out and I need it.” Abby tries to stand up but slips back down again.

“You need to get some help.” I turn my back on her, resting my hands on the basin while I try and pull my head together. I shouldn’t give a fuck. This girl ain’t no friend of Ella’s. Not really.

But I know Ella isn’t like me. She’s a good person, she’s kind and forgiving and she would be heartbroken if anything happened to her best friend. And for that reason. I’m gonna have to help her.

I turn around and pick her up in my arms, holding her under the water and hoping to get some life back into her eyes.

“You don’t deserve what I’m about to do for you, but I need someone to be there for Ella.”

“Thanks Nyx,” she breathes a sigh of relief. “You need me to give you what I gave Luke? I’m all out of allowance this month.” Her limp hand reaches out for my belt and I shake her out of it.

“Abby, I ain’t getting you yourjunk, I’m getting you help,” I tell her, trying to think straight. I can’t call anyone at the club, Prez is mad enough at me, besides, Abby needs to be away from any temptation. Anything you shoot up is a hard limit at the club but, other recreationals are freely available.

“Help? What do you mean, help? I need a fix, Nyx” She starts scratching at her arms again, desperation overriding the dead in her eyes.

I ignore her and pull out my cell. Realizing that this is a time when having a friend outside the club would come in real fucking handy. I scroll through my contacts and consider calling Roswell, I could come up with a lame ass excuse. He's bound to know where to take her. But Roswell don’t keep anything from Prez.

There’s only one person I can call.

“Hello?” he answers the phone cautiously. It's late and I suspect he’s off the clock. Deputy’s don’t do graveyard shifts.

“Danny, it’s Nyx.”

“Tac’s kid?” I don’t bother to correct him.

“Yeah, you remember you owe me that favor,” I remind him.

“Sure,” he responds.

“Well…” I look at the helpless wreck that Ella’s best friend has become. “…I’m calling it in.”

Riding a bus over to Manitou Springs has become part of my weekend routine. There’s a cute little library there where I get some studying done, and I always pass an hour away in the coffee shop over the street from the tattoo studio where Nyx used to work. It’s rare that I get through a visit without seeing one of the men who wear the Dirty Souls patch on their vests, and so many times I’ve been tempted to ask one of them how he’s doing.

I’ve never felt this alone, ever. I’m missing having Abby around. She left to join her parents in Europe last month without even saying goodbye to me,and despite me texting her and telling her I forgive her over the whole Luke thing, she’s terrible at keeping in touch.
