“Mrs. Burlusconi had all this sent here a few months ago. All the Burlusconi children slept in it,” she steps inside and runs her fingers over the crib.

“Do you think they will be happy together?” I ask the old woman, doing my best not to sound jealous.

“It’s not my place to say.” She shys away.

“It’s just you and me here. Please, I need someone to talk to.”

Wendy shakes her head back at me. “I think there will only ever be one person who could make Mr. Burlusconi happy. I’ve been his housekeeper since he bought this place five years ago and I’ve never seen him smile the way he does when he’s around you.

I know he does bad things but he is a man of his word. He will treat the girl well, but he won’t love her.”

“Is that supposed to be my consolation?” I look at her sadly.

“There is no consolation for a broken heart.” She takes my hand and squeezes it in hers.

“I’m going to make crab cakes for lunch,” she tells me before she leaves, and I nod back at her, trying to look grateful.

Seeing all this has proved something to me. I hate to admit it to myself, but no matter how deep I dig, I can’t be happy for the two of them.

How can I be, when I want everything she will have, as much as I do?

I want to kiss Raoul every night before I go to sleep. I want him to be the first person I see every morning. I want to rock our child in that crib and wrap them in this blanket that I’m holding. Despite all the wrong he does I want him to be mine. And for that reason, I have to get out of this house.

I rush into the spare room and get my purse, checking I have my studio keys and my cell, then I head down the stairs, checking that the coast is clear. If I can sneak out the gates and onto the main road, I can get a cab. It’s the getting through the gate part that will be a problem, especially with Ludo on patrol.

Lucky for me the gate is unmanned, and I don’t attempt to guess the code to open them in case it triggers an alarm. Instead, I check over my shoulder for any guards and start to climb.

I wait until I’m safely in a cab and a far enough distance away before typing my message to Raoul…
