“Hang on,” I tell her, calling out to Wendy, who comes running.

“Do you know the code?” I ask.

“Yes, but…”

“It’s my best friend,” I assure her. Wendy quickly types the numbers into the keypad and Kendra abandons her car to race toward me. I meet her out on the drive, catching her in my arms when she stumbles.

“Is Raoul here?” she asks, breathlessly.

“No, Niko’s out looking for him. Kenda, what's happened?”

“This is all my fault,” she cries into her hands.

“Kendra, calm down and tell me what's happened.”

“Last night, I was at the club with some guys from the shoot, and I saw Fabian. He was talking about you. He even made me feel a little sorry for him,” she explains, trying to catch her breath. “He started handing out some blow and I joined in. I don’t know what happened to the other guys, they must have bailed on me, I was so fucking buzzed.” I have to remind her to calm down when her words start to stutter.

“Next thing I know, we’re in this room and we’re alone,” she looks at me guiltily. “Oh my god Kendra, did he…”

“No, no,” she shakes her head.

“He was acting crazy. Telling me about this plan he had to make Raoul pay for what he did. He showed me a video of you. He’s going to use it so Raoul goes to him, and then…” She bursts into tears. “I’m so sorry, I passed out and when I woke up this morning, there was no sign of him. I didn’t even know where I was until this girl calmed me down and took care of me. He has rooms at the club, Evelyn, the girls are all walking around there like fucking zombies. It freaked me the hell out and then as soon as everything started coming back to me, I came straight here.

“Where was he taking him?” I grab her shoulders and force her to focus on me.

“I can’t remember, I’ve tried all the way out here to think but I have all these blanks, maybe if we go back to the club I can talk to one of the girls. I was in such a hurry to leave that place I didn’t think to ask…”

“Kendra, you’ve done great,” I assure her, feeling the panic start to overwhelm me.

I assess my options and look over my shoulder to where Wendy is standing watching us.

“Please don’t,” she shakes her head at me, clearly she knows exactly what I’m thinking.

“I have to. I don’t know how much time we have.”

“Let me call Niko back. Wait for him, he can deal with this,” she begs me.

“I can’t.”

“Maybe she’s right, I can go back to the club and speak to the girls myself, you stay here. We can stay in contact by phone.” Kendra tries to pull away from me but I stop her.

“No, I’m coming with you.” I won’t argue on this. If Raoul's in trouble, I’m going to be the one to get him out of it.

“Wait,” Wendy calls after us defeatedly, then disappears back inside the house, holding us in suspense until she rushes back out again. The gun she’s carrying looks so out of place in the old woman’s hand.

“You know how to use one of these?” she asks.

“I do.” Kendra shocks me when she takes the gun, checking it over before tucking it into the back of her jeans.

“What?” she shrugs, drying her tears with the back of her hand. “Daddy used to take me to the firing range when I was a little girl,” she informs me, and I wonder if it’s the sort of thing my father would have ever done with me. I think he’d like the idea of me being able to protect myself. I quickly remind myself of the urgency of the situation

“Call Niko and explain, tell him I’ll be in touch as soon as we find out where Fabian’s taken Raoul,” I instruct Wendy.

“I don’t like this girls. Be careful.” She looks worried as she watches us race out the gates and toward Kendra's car.

“Give me the keys,” I head for the driver's door and hold out my hand. Kendra doesn't argue, and immediately sits in the passenger seat, she knows she was in no fit state to drive out here but that doesn’t mean I’m not grateful to her for it.

“Think, Kendra, did he say anything to you about locations?”
