“How much longer do you think, Cade?” I ask a few minutes later.

He stands and walks toward me. “I don’t know, Seb. She’s been down a while, so hopefully soon.”

“I can’t stand the waiting.”

My mom walks over. “Come and sit down. Do you want a drink?”

She takes my arm and leads me to a chair. I sigh and sit down. “No, thanks.”

Minutes later, the double doors leading to the trauma area open, and a doctor appears.

“Are you all here for Taylor?” he asks, nodding at Cade.

I stand. “I’m her boyfriend. Is she okay?”

“She’s out of surgery and in recovery. We removed the spleen and stopped the bleeding. She’s broken her leg in three places, so we’ve pinned it and she’s in a cast.”

“Is she going to be okay?”

“She’s not out of danger yet.” My mom slips her hand into mine and squeezes. “She suffered a head trauma in the accident. There’s significant swelling and we’ve put her into a medically induced coma in the hope that the swelling reduces. When it does, we can wake her up.”

“And if the swelling doesn’t reduce?” I ask, fear creeping up my spine.

He smiles sympathetically. “Let’s take one day at a time.”

“Can I see her?”

“Not tonight, I’m afraid. She should be out of recovery in the morning.”

I can’t wait until then. I look helplessly at Cade, who steps forward.

“Just five minutes, Bill.”

He nods. “Okay. I’ll send a nurse out.”

Relief crashes over me as he turns and disappears through the double doors. I turn to Cade.

“Thank you,” I tell him, pulling him into a hug. “She’ll wake up, right? Once the swelling has gone down?”

“I hope so, Seb.”

I pull out of the embrace when I hear soft sobbing. Looking past Cade, I see Paisley’s crying in Nash’s arms. Walking over to her, I place my hand on her back.

“Are you okay?”

She moves out of Nash’s arms and turns around. “It should be me asking you that.”

I frown. “You’re her best friend, Paisley.”

She shakes her head. “I think she hates me,” she whispers.

“No. She doesn’t. She loves you.”

“I lied to her. She’s got every right to be mad.”

I pull her into my arms. “I should never have asked you to keep my secrets. I’m sorry, Paisley.”

“I love you,” she says, hugging me tightly.
