“Why, then? Why would he jeopardize his friendship with you and his relationship with his brother?”

“You need to talk to him, Tay.”

“What did Cade say?”

“He was surprised. We both were.”

“He wasn’t annoyed?”

She sighs, and Hunter stirs in her arms. She releases my hand and gently strokes his face. When he’s settled, she looks up. “He was pissed for a few days, but seeing how devastated Seb was as the weeks went by and you weren’t waking up, it was easy for Cade to see how Seb felt about you. He’s been torn up, Taylor.”

My heart twists in my chest hearing he’s been hurting these past few weeks.

“What about you?” I ask, knowing it must have been an awkward conversation for them all.

“I’m good, Taylor. I love Seb, but like a brother…” She trails off. “Arewegood?” she asks quietly.

I take her hand again. “Yes, Sophie. It was never you I was upset with. I knew you didn’t know. I thought because he hadn’t told me, he was settling with me because he couldn’t be with you.”

She shakes her head. “That was never how it was, Taylor.”

“I’m beginning to see that,” I say quietly.

“Promise me you’ll talk to him.”

I smile at her. “I promise.”

She looks down at Hunter. “Do you feel up to a cuddle? He’s been looking forward to meeting his auntie Taylor.”

“I’d love to.” She stands and places him in my arms. I gaze down at him as he yawns and stretches his tiny body out. “He’s beautiful, Sophie.”

“I think so, but I’m biased.”

The door opens and Seb walks in with a handful of sandwiches. “I didn’t know what you wanted, so I…” He looks up and trails off when he sees Sophie. His eyes flick to me holding Hunter and he smiles.

“Hey, how’s my nephew doing?” he asks, crossing the room and coming around to the other side of the bed.

“He’s perfect,” I tell him, my eyes filling with tears as I stare at Seb. It’s only now I see how tired and pale he looks. I’m not surprised knowing he spent every night here for five weeks. I guess that explains the beard too.

“I should take him back to the ward. He’s going to need a feed soon,” Sophie says.

“You’ll come and see me again, right?”

“Of course we will.” She takes Hunter from my arms and presses a kiss on his head. “I’ll stop by tomorrow. I’m sure you’ll be here then too, Seb.” She chuckles.

“I’ll be wherever Taylor is.”

She smiles. “See you both tomorrow.”

When she and Hunter have left, Seb sits down. “I didn’t know what sandwich you wanted, so I got a selection.”

“You told Sophie and Cade,” I say, ignoring his comment about the sandwiches. His eyes meet mine and he nods. “Why?”

I hold my breath as I wait for him to answer. Despite what Sophie’s told me, I still don’t know why he’d tell his brother he once had feelings for his wife. He could have damaged his relationship with them both forever. Surely nothing is worth that?
