My heart twists in my chest, knowing she’s hurting, and it’s because of me.

“Fuck,” I mutter.

“I know you’ve been the same as well. I don’t think you were this miserable when you were getting over Sophie,” she says. “You should think about what that means.” She waves her arm. “I’ve probably said too much, but I care about you both and I want you to be happy.”

I climb off the bike and pull her into a hug. She’s right. As much as I thought I was in love with Sophie, how I feel about losing Taylor makes me question what I felt for Sophie. “I’m going to her place now. I finally got my head out of my ass like everyone said I should.”

She steps out of my embrace and grins. “Go! Quickly!” I laugh as she pushes me gently toward the bike. “Tell Taylor I want to knoweverything.”

I pull on my helmet and ride away, leaving an excited Paisley behind me. I stop at the grocery store, grabbing some chocolate for Taylor before parking at the back of Eden, bypassing the bar. I should check everything’s okay, but I want to see Taylor. I take the stairs to her apartment two at a time but pause when I reach the door. Taking a couple of deep breaths, I lift my hand and knock on the wood. The door swings open and Taylor stands in front of me wrapped in a blanket.

“Hey. How are you feeling?” I ask, noticing how pale her face is.

“Hey, come in. I’m okay. The pain meds have kicked in.”

“Good.”

She turns and walks back into the apartment, and I follow her, closing the door behind me. She sits on the sofa, curling her legs underneath her.

“Help yourself to a drink. There’s soda in the fridge.”

I place the brown paper bag on the sofa next to her and walk across the apartment to the kitchen.

“Do you want anything?”

“I’ll have a soda, please.”

Reaching inside the refrigerator, I take out two cans and go back to her, sitting down.

“Thanks,” she says as I pass her a drink. “What’s in the bag?” she asks, sitting up and peeking inside.

I chuckle. “I got you some chocolate.”

She looks across at me and smiles. “Thank you.” She reaches inside and pulls out the large bar. Opening it, she breaks off a piece and holds it out to me.

I smile and take it from her.

“How did the rest of the shower go?” she asks when she’s swallowed her mouthful of chocolate.

“It was good. I don’t think I realized how muchstuffa baby needs. We struggled to get it all in Cade’s car.”

She laughs. “There were a lot of gifts. I wish I could have stayed.”

“I was worried when Paisley said you were sick.”

She looks at me. “You were?”

I nod, taking the can of soda out of her hand and placing it on the side table with mine. Picking up her hand, I stroke my thumb gently over her skin.

“I’m sorry I was such an idiot when you told me how you felt. I…” I trail off and drag my free hand through my hair. “I didn’t know how to deal with it.”

“You have nothing to apologize for. I knew the score when we started sleeping together. I should never have let things get as far as they did.” She sighs. “I guess the more time we spent together, the more I hoped you’d start to feel things too.”

“Taylor—”

“It’s okay, Seb,” she says, cutting me off and lowering her eyes to our joined hands. “Right now, I just want our friendship back. I miss you.”

I continue to rub my thumb over the back of her hand and smile. “I don’t think being friends is a good idea.”
