The day before Halloween

The first time I heard someone say ‘it’s spooky season’ I wondered if they saw me. But obviously they didn’t.

No one ever does.

I’m wandering around this city, passing people on the street and watching them prepare for a fun weekend. People are buying costumes and making plans with friends. I even see some kids wearing their costumes even though Halloween isn’t for another day.

The best part is the dog I see dressed as a pumpkin. Who wouldn’t love that?

People get really excited about this holiday, it’s all I’ve been hearing about for weeks. The first time I heard someone say ‘it’s spooky season’ I wondered if they saw me. But obviously they didn’t.

No one ever does.

Decorations are everywhere. Fake skeletons hang from doors, large spiders dangle from manufactured webbing and carved pumpkins sit by doors.

I think I like this time of year. It almost feels like I’m a part of things. I fit in with everything happening around me, I’m another person strolling through the streets in costume.

A bloody, gory look isn’t uncommon during Halloween. In fact, it’s encouraged.

I wish I could remember a Halloween from before, but I’ve lost all those memories. I only remember the last two years when I spent my time in the suburbs where Halloween is all about the kids. Some teenagers made havoc but it was rare. Being in the city is more incredible. There are people everywhere and I’m absorbing more energy than ever before.

As I glide through the streets, I look for someone interesting to watch for the night. I love when I can find some real life drama unfolding, or sometimes a couple who seem happy and in love. Anything to make me feel alive. It’s incredibly entertaining to see lovers turn against each other at the first sign of trouble.

Grant glides next to me, joining me on my hunt. He’s as pale as I am with an older look about him. His hair is a light gray, like it just started changing but who knows how long it’s been stuck like that. It’s styled long and pushed behind his ears, not that he could change it if he wanted to.

“What are you up to?” he asks.

I continue moving through the groups of people, hoping something catches my eye.

“Looking for entertainment,” I explain, even though he already knows.

He’s a strange one. He likes to follow me around and help cause havoc but doesn’t say much. He does the polite thing and says something when he shows up, but it’s more out of obligation than interest. I think he just wants to feel less lonely. I get that.

He found me once I came to the city and I don’t mind the company. It’s easier to cause trouble with a partner.

I finally find a couple making out. They’re in an alley trying to swallow each other’s tongues. It’s dark and dirty here in the back street, the perfect place to join them.

The woman breaks away from his lips. “You promise you love me?”

So not the happy couple I was looking for but they will do.

I give her a cursory glance but don’t take in any of her details. It’s not important.

“Yes! I swear, baby! You know you’re the only one for me. I love you!” He’s clearly trying to sound passionate but it comes out monotone. More annoyed than anything else.

Unsurprisingly, it’s clear the line works on the woman when she smiles ear to ear. I’ve seen more women fall for sleazy men and their tricks than I’d like to.

“Promise?” she begs.

Booooring! I prefer to mess with people while they’re giving each other heart eyes but this couple is in a dark alley, so I follow through.

I move into the shadows and use some of my ghostly powers to push a metal lid over at the end of the alley.

They both jump, looking down into the dark to see where the noise came from. But they won’t see me.
