They start to back up slowly, making their way to the other end of the alley. That’s when Grant comes in.

He imitates footsteps crunching on the debris scattered everywhere. The ground is covered in food wrappers, flattened cardboard boxes and piles of wood. The living are so messy.

Now they’re getting scared. Both of their hands are shaking by their sides.

“Who’s there?” the man asks, putting on a brave face for his woman.

There’s no response, obviously. We wouldn’t waste power answering them. The only sound is a passing ambulance siren.

“Let’s get out of here, John,” the woman demands but her voice is small.

I crash into the dumpster, and they jump out of their skin. It’s the best feeling.

The more scared they get, the stronger we become. Their fear actually allows us to torment them more.

I imagine an illusion covering the wall near them. I project it from my mind and into reality.

Sticky, red blood drips down the wall and onto the ground.

The woman shrieks. “John! There’s blood! We have to get out of here!”

But neither of them move, likely because they have no idea which way is safe. We’ve made noise from both directions.

Time for the big finale. Although, if they stay longer, we will keep going until they lose their minds. No reason to stop sooner than we have to, but I’m pretty sure this will be the tipping point for them.

Grant materializes a knife, whipping it through the air towards their heads.

A wet spot appears on her pants before the woman passes out. The man doesn’t even look back at her as he runs from the alley. He abandons the woman he was just reassuring he loves to a psycho killer in a dark alleyway.

Men are stupid and distrustful. Their word means nothing, and I relish using my powers to show women how useless their men are.

Grant floats over to me, shaking his head. “It’s always the same isn’t it?”

“Always,” I agree.

“Are you excited for Halloween?” Grant asks.

I’m not sure why I would be excited. It’s better than the rest of the year but nothing really gets me worked up.

Maybe it will be easier to scare people because the world is already in a scary place.

I make a noncommittal noise and Grant doesn’t comment.

He follows me as I leave the alley.

I see someone scurrying through the streets, jumping at every noise. When a car alarm goes off he turns white and hides. I might as well mess with one more person before calling it a night. He’s the perfect target.

Grant sees my intention and stops next to me. “I’m going to find who I want to spend time with. Probably a hot, young thing. Good luck with that one.”

He moves through the wall of the building next to me. It’s a dance club I’ve spent time in before. It’s full of attractive people I have also spent time watching.

Why he would rather do that now than spend time haunting this fool is beyond me.

This guy probably doesn’t deserve what I’m about to do to him, but he radiates fear like no one I’ve ever seen. As I get closer to him on the street, I notice he has large, dark circles around his eyes. Nervously, he moistens his dry lips before heading up the stairs of a building. This guy fuels my powers to new levels.

I think I can really scare him and juice up for a while. As Halloween grows nearer I feel so much stronger, it must be all the fear in the air.

I follow him inside his home, and he immediately gets in the shower. Of course, I take a minute to check him out. He’s kind of lanky with long, shaggy hair. Definitely not someone I’m attracted to but I could see him being someone’s type. Not that it matters.
