He speaks as if… It can’t be, but why would he speak so negatively of his own kind?

“You don’t like ghosts?” I ask hesitantly.

Fredrick is staring at our little ghost with suspicion.

“No, I don’t think they should stick around after death. It’s distasteful,” the old man ghost spits.

I stiffen, insulted on behalf of my mate. “You do realize you’re a-”

Oz stops me before I can say more. “That’s not important. We want our ghost to stick around, and we need to find a way to make it happen,” Oz says.

I know why. If Fredrick doesn’t know he’s a ghost, it’s probably in our best interest to keep it that way. We don’t want to upset him and this way, he won’t ask us for help.

Frederick walks over to a bookshelf in the corner, pulling one out and analyzing it.

“I will look but the research is inconclusive. The only successful case has been-”

My phone rings, cutting him off. There’s been a lot of that today.

I immediately answer since it’s from Elias.

“Do you have something?” I snap. We need good news.

“I have a potion to try. Come back now so it’s ready when you get here.” Elias hangs up.

I stand and smile at Fredrick, indicating the others should follow.

“We have a lead we must follow. As you know, time is of the essence in this circumstance. If you think of anything at all, please let me know. You can find us at this address or call me. We are desperate, so if you find the answer, we will give you anything you want,” Oz says. He must have heard the call with his vampire hearing.

Fredrick looks greedy at Oz’s suggestion and turns back to his book immediately.

We let ourselves out and get back to Elias’ warehouse as fast as we can.

12:30 a.m.

We rush back from Fredrick’s house, excited to hear what Elias has found. The ghost wizard didn’t give us a solution and clearly was not an actual fan of ghosts. Why devote your life to studying something you don’t even like?

No, I don’t think they should stick around after death. It’s distasteful.

He clearly doesn’t even know he’s a ghost who is stuck around. He’s the distasteful one. I wanted to tell him and ruin all his preconceived notions. He was looking at me like scum. But I restrained, we might need him at some point. If they didn’t see some value in him, I’m sure Silas or Oz would have ruined him.

When we get back to Elias’, I hear glass breaking. We rush inside and objects are flying everywhere. Is Elias okay? Did someone show up here for something, and they’re fighting? I have to believe Elias can hold his own but that doesn’t mean he should have to.

Finally, we find Elias, and he’s going through his shelves while cursing the ingredients out. He’s the source of the chaos and I relax slightly. At least we don’t have to add a fight to the night’s agenda, it’s already completely packed. It’s twelve-thirty in the morning and I don’t know exactly when my night will end.

When he sees us he explains, “I need an ingredient that’s incredibly rare. I thought I had some but I can’t fucking find it!”

Uh oh.

“Well, where can we get some?” Silas demands.

“Luckily I know someone who can help. I’ve already asked them for it, but we are running out of time. If I had it, it wouldn’t be a problem,” Elias explains.

I don’t know anything about procuring rare ingredients, so I keep my mouth shut.
