I’d shoot the fucker right now, but something about his demeanor tells me he wouldn’t think twice about plunging the knife into Josephine.

I hold up my weapon. “Alright, Jacob, I’m backing off.”

“You just had to come after her, didn’t you? You saw how fucking pure and good she was and you had to fucking taint her,” Jacob continues to yell, pointing the shaking knife against her side.

I swallow hard and take in how desperate he has become. My heart beats faster as I assess how dangerous this situation is. I need to appease him right now and hope he lowers his weapon.

“I had no right.” The words chafe against my throat.

“You’re damn right you had no right. She’s mine! I was her first and I’ll be her last. She ran away because she couldn’t handle me wearing the pants in the relationship, but she needs a man to control and guide her. She would have seen it eventually and come back to me. I was close to having her come on her own free will, letting her believe she had a say in the matter to appease her stubborn side,” he rambles with the knife still snug against her.

My teeth grind together. “I get it,” I lie.

Jacob nods his head like he thinks I’m seeing his warped logic. “She’s better off with me. She would never make it in your world. She’s too good for you.” His hold on the knife relaxes some.

I nod my head and take in Josephine’s dead weight on Jacob’s shoulder. “Is she okay?”

Jacob’s eyes flicker with emotion. “She tried to fight me. I only wanted to love her, love her the way she deserves. But she resisted. I had no choice,” he says with a slight edge to his tone. He points the knife at me. “She fought me because you poisoned her mind against me. But she will come to her senses, and I will be the one who rebuilds her.”

My chest heaves with fear. “What did you do to her?”

Jacob’s face contorts from anger to something resembling regret. “She wouldn’t let me in. I—I strangled her. I had no choice.”

My worry for her takes over, and I come around the vehicle with my hands up and approach him.

Jacob panics. “What the fuck are you doing? Don’t come any closer.”

“Jacob, put her down. She needs medical attention,” I say firmly.

Jacob’s expression twists with anger and tears run down his face. “I take care of her.”

“Yes,” I say. I make eye contact with Flay before looking back at Jacob. “You care for her by bringing her to a medic. You make sure she gets the proper care she needs, to ensure you can have a long and happy life together.”

Jacob’s eyes light up, and he nods. “Yeah, I make sure she has all she needs.”

I nod my head. “You’ve got it all figured out. You know exactly what is best for her when she doesn’t. And right now she’s unable to decide, meaning you have to. You know, we’ve got a navy medic right here. If you want her to get the treatment she needs right away, this would be a good option, seeing as we’re miles from the closest hospital,” I offer.

Flay comes up with the medical kit he always carries on his bike.

Jacob looks leery but nods for Flay to approach.

“Why don’t you lower her to the ground? I can take a look at her better there. You can stay next to her and be there when she comes to. She’ll feel better knowing you’re here,” Flay suggests, appeasing to Jacob’s self-righteous ego.

Jacob nods in agreement and pulls her from his shoulders, lowering her to the ground. He removes the tape from her wrists and holds her hand while Flay quickly gets to work removing the duct tape from her face. I creep closer to my pixie. She looks like an angel in her wedding dress—a beaten and bruised angel.

Flay regards Jacob with a serious face. “She’s got a pulse, but she isn’t breathing and is unresponsive. We need to activate an emergency response system. I need you to run to the ambulance over there and grab the AED while I start administering rescue breathing. We need the AED if her pulse stops and CPR doesn’t bring her back.”

Jacob practically wails, grabbing at his head. “Oh my God! What have I done?”

Flay grabs him by the arm and shakes him. “Jacob she needs you. Go now!”

Jacob jumps to his feet and starts racing at full tilt to the patrol cars and ambulance up ahead with the knife still in his hand, waving his arms above his head in panic.

The police order him again and again to drop his knife, but he doesn’t hear their warning, caught up in his terror over possibly losing Josephine. I see what’s unfolding, and I should stop the disaster happening in front of me, but I won’t. The fucker deserves what’s coming.

But Josephine needs medical attention!

I start to scream for the paramedics, but Flay lays a heavy hand on me, holding me in place. He stares at me with a firm gaze. I know he’s trying to communicate something with me, but I’m so fucking worried about my pixie, I’m not registering anything. My head whips back to the scene in front of me as the police open fire on Jacob, peppering him with bullets. Jacob falls to ground and remains there, unmoving.
