A little over four hours later, we return to the compound where Maceo parks in front of headquarters in the circular driveway.
A flare of annoyance stirs inside me. He has all the time in the world to do whatever he needs to do at headquarters. He’s not the one leaving—I am. There’s too much on my to-do list to waste my time waiting for him to finish whatever work has brought him here today.
“Can’t you drop me off at home? I’ve got so much to get done with packing and sorting shit at the house” I complain.
“It’ll just be a minute. I need to check in with the tech team about a couple of things. Then we’ll be on our way,” Maceo says nonchalantly, already climbing out of the vehicle.
Ugh!
“Can I at least wait in the car? If I go in there, you’ll take twice as long.”
Maceo answers with a pointed look, saying it’s not an option.
“Fine,” I grumble, climbing out of the SUV. “I have to pee, anyway.”
Maceo holds the front door for me as I enter. We round the corner from the entry and…
“SURPRISE!”
“Jesus!” I jump back against Maceo’s front, clutching my chest.
The room erupts with laughter, everyone in the family present. The living room is decked out in various shades of blue streamers and balloons. AHappy Baby Showerbanner is displayed on a tightrope across the room.
Oh, my goodness.With all the disheartening crap I’ve had to deal with, this is a welcome surprise.
My eyes prick right as happy tears seep out of the corners.
My mom approaches me in her apron and pulls me into a tight hug. “We weren’t planning on doing this for a few more weeks, but with you having to leave, we wanted to give it early.”
Laughing through my tears, I wipe at my eyes. “You guys, thank you. This really brightens my mood.”
Sniggering like the cocky ass he is, Maceo wraps his arms around me from behind and presses his lips to my ear. “Is it okay that we came into headquarters now?”
I swat his arm playfully before the family pulls me into the festivities.
