My eyes snap to the driver sitting at the wheel of the car. Painful, familiar brown eyes stare back at me with the same old possessive look they held from years before.

Levi.

No. It can’t be.

It must be a hallucination. Or maybe I haven’t woken up. This is all a bad dream.

But the longer I watch him, the more my harsh reality sets in.

He’s found me.

Past fears return, crashing over me in a flood of raw emotion. Memories I had buried resurface—memories of insecurity and humiliation. And pain…so much emotional and physical pain. Pain that controls me to this day.

My skin breaks out in a cold sweat, like my body can sense impending doom. Everything shuts down inside, locking me in place.

This can’t be happening.

Slowly, my vision recedes, tunneling until my world blinks to black.

CHAPTERFORTY-EIGHT

GAUGE

Working a desk job blows, but it’s part of the business. Reassuring clients and promoting the security company is how we keep our pockets lined. I don’t mind communicating with clients about their concerns. Atlas claims I’m a better people-person than he is, and I have to agree, but even I have my limit yakking on the phone.

After sitting here for six hours following up with clients, I’m ready for a break. I could really use a cup of coffee from the café downtown. My woman has got me addicted to their triple espresso. Maybe Opal and I could take an afternoon trip into town to power me through the rest of the day.

I’ve just wrapped up a phone call when I hear all hell break loose in the main living room.

“Someone grab Gauge! Have Chase check surveillance,” Eagle hollers.

Hearing the duress in my brother’s voice has me striding quickly out of the office. The first thing I see when I walk into the living room is Opal out cold in Eagle’s arms. I rush over to the couch as he’s lowering her onto it.

“Opal? Gorgeous, wake up,” I plead, my voice rising in octave as panic settles in my gut. I cup her face in my hands, gently trying to stir her awake.

When she doesn’t open her eyes, I yell to my brothers crowding into the room. “Someone fetch Flay. Tell him to bring his medical kit.”

“I’m here.” Flay squats next to me, rifling through his bag.

Worried, I look at Eagle. “What happened?”

“I was escorting her to the mailbox,” he explains. “While she was retrieving the mail, a car slowed to a crawl. The driver called out to her by her name.”

I frown. “They knew Opal?”

Eagle shakes his head, his face murderous. “He knowsOlina.”

Motherfucker!

“CHASE!”

“He’s already on it, VP,” Ziggy answers for our brother.

“It’s him. Tell him it’shim. I want headquarters on lockdown—the women and Jo’s parents need to stay on the premises. I want everyone not on assignment to be brought in.”

“On it,” Ziggy says, sprinting back into the tech room.

My head whips to Eagle. “Did you get a good look at him?”
