Now it was time to accept and enjoy my new life, a true gift from a man who deserved his angel wings.

Harlow

One month later

“Are you sure this is okay to wear?” Lily asked in her rambunctious voice. Princess barked her appreciation, which always made me laugh.

“You look like a little princess. Perfect.” I smoothed down her shirt, the one she’d asked me to wash. It was covered in unicorns, which in my mind was a sign of hope.

For the future.

For the love we shared.

For a life that wouldn’t include danger.

After wrinkling her nose, she threw her arms around me. “I think I’ll call you Harlow now.”

“I don’t know. I kind of liked Penny.”

“We’ll see.” She pulled away, the light in her eyes dimming for a few seconds. “Will Daddy and Mommy know I’m there?”

“Do you remember what I told you?” I asked, sensing Savage had entered the room.

“That Mommy and Daddy would always be with me, especially when I closed my eyes.”

I had to take a deep breath before answering her, blinking away tears. “That’s right. Now, close your eyes. Tell me what you see?”

Lily twisted her little body back and forth. “Daddy’s laughing! Mommy is smiling.”

Whether or not she remembered her mother or was making up a face didn’t matter.

As I pressed my hand over my mouth, a single tear slipped down my cheek. Today was going to be tougher than I thought. “That’s wonderful, honey. Now, I need to finish getting ready but five minutes, okay?”

“O-tay!”

As I stood, my legs shaking, I had to turn away. The last thing the precious girl needed was to see me falling apart. I hadn’t done that since the horrible ordeal, able to maintain my composure while the aftermath was dealt with. The police eventually came to our door, but our stories had been consistent with what we’d gone over with Frank and Carrie. The two people had been incredible to us, their protection and friendship something we would value for years to come.

With the evidence Savage had provided to the FBI, eighteen police officers had been caught in the sting, various corporate business leaders as well. The entire town had been rattled to the core.

I headed into the hallway, brushing past Savage in an effort to get out of her line of sight. He caught me, pulling me into his massive arms as he’d done so many times before. When he pressed my head to his chest, I finally allowed several tears to fall, something I’d promised myself I wouldn’t do.

“Everything is going to be alright. You do know that, right?” he asked in his sultry, deep voice, the sound sending tremors through me.

“I know. It’s just…”

“She’s a strong girl, just like you’re a strong woman.” He hovered close, trailing his fingers down the side of my face. “You know how much I hunger for you, right?”

I clamped my hands around his shirt, lifting my head. The hard ridge of his cock pressed against my stomach, the sensations roaring through me like a tidal wave. “You’ll have to remind me later.”

“I plan on it, lady.” As he captured my mouth, electric vibrations skated down my legs, the effect making me lightheaded. I was so completely aroused I could become lost in him, even though I knew it wasn’t the right time.

He slipped his tongue inside, slowly swishing it back and forth across mine. This was nothing but a reminder I belonged to him. I’d never forget how he’d stormed into Frank and Carrie’s house, refusing to allow a horrible man to hurt me. He’d become my hero that day, although he’d never allow me to say the word. At least the surprise I had in store for him might bring the final level of peace that would break him free of the treacherous hold the demons had on his soul.

For the few precious seconds, there was nothing else in the world but the two of us. When he finally pulled away, he dragged his tongue around my lips, issuing a single growl. “Later.”

“We should go.”
