His face reddening, he flipped through the pages. “No, he’s off today.”

I moved closer, enough so I was able to gather a whiff of scotch. I inhaled, breathing against his face on purpose. “Here’s what you’re going to do. You’re going to write down my phone number. Then you’re going to have a chat with your technician in which you’re going to find out if there were any strange calls regarding the Lexus, anyone else who knew my brother had left the vehicle here, the time my brother picked it up, and if anyone other than the technician had the ability to spend time alone with the car. Do you understand me?”

He nodded as he’d done before, but his lower lip was quivering. “Sure thing, Mr. Masters. Just give me your number.”

I did and was prepared to leave. Then I turned back. “I suggest very strongly that you don’t fuck with me. You won’t like it when I get angry.”

All color drained from his face before I walked away. As I left, I heard his moan and smiled.

Maybe I would finally start to get some answers.

If not, I was ready to tear up this town until I did.

Piece by piece.

CHAPTER16

Savage

Two days had passed, both of them quiet yet tense.

I was finished with playing the nice guy. I also wasn’t going to take no for an answer with regard to Harlow. My gut was telling me something was about to go down and I refused to have her in the crossfire.

As I took long strides through the office, the staff finally greeted me more favorably. They were getting used to the fact I wasn’t a typical businessman. There would be no five-thousand-dollar suits and ties, no polished shoes. The business would also be handled my way.

I headed straight to Harlow’s office, not bothering to knock before entering.

She was gone. The woman never left before at least six. What the hell? Where the fuck was she?

I stormed through the office, trying to track down Harlow’s assistant. Her computer had been turned off as well. Huffing, I headed for Jackie’s office. As manager, she should know the whereabouts of various employees.

“Jackie.”

She was startled, jumping as soon as I said her name. “Mr. Masters. I didn’t know you were here.”

“Where’s Harlow?”

“Harlow told me she was taking work home. Is there a problem?”

I sucked in my breath. “I hope to hell not.” I could tell she wanted to say something to me. “What is it, Jackie?”

“I don’t want to speak out of place.”

“Don’t worry. Whatever you have to say is fine.”

After looking toward the window, she sighed. “Mr. Masters, I mean your brother was very tense before his accident.”

“Do you know why?”

“I’m certain you’ve heard he kept certain aspects of business to himself. He had a few phone calls I could tell troubled him.”

“Any idea by whom?”

“No, but he was furious.”

“Did he have any visitors, anything that seemed out of the ordinary?”

She rose from her desk. “No. It was business as usual.”
