There was a moment of silence, the tension palpable.

“What the fuck are you doing?” Broderick asked.

“My job, although it’s become abundantly clear that I wasn’t provided with all the information.”

“You were given everything you needed to perform an extraction and protection. From what I gathered from your handler, you’ve accomplished both.”

I resisted laughing. “Yeah, but not without certain… difficulties. What I wasn’t told is how long I’m required to maintain my current status.”

“Until you’re ordered otherwise.”

As suspected, the man didn’t want to tell me what the hell was going on. “Not acceptable. I need to know what this shit is about, and it has nothing to do with human trafficking and never did.” Up to this point, the thought was still very much up in the air.

Until there was another full hesitation.

This was personal, a kidnapping to make a statement.

“Who is Willow Cavanaugh to Castillo?” I asked, my tone demanding.

“An important commodity.” He answered only after taking several deep breaths.

“Meaning?”

“Meaning it’s none of your business.”

Now I was the one to take a deep breath. “Then I’m going to venture a guess from what I’ve found in my recent searches. Jennifer Cavanaugh is in direct competition with one of Castillo’s legitimate corporations. In fact, she managed to nearly crush the slightly smaller company over the last few years in her attempt to control the market. From what I’ve been able to ascertain, Castillo lost millions, money needed to launder the dirty bills he gets from selling arms and cocaine, as well as selling women to the highest bidder. Am I getting close, Director Broderick?”

When he didn’t answer I was encouraged by his silence.

“This has nothing to do with human trafficking but everything to do with legal drugs. I intend on finding out why I’ve been lied to given my top level security and my employment by a recently organized security firm that supposedly hires the most trustworthy, loyal, and highly skilled soldiers in the military.”

“You are a fascinating soldier, Viper. I give you credit, although your job is not to delve into the reasons why an incident happened but to ensure the safety of the party involved.”

Chuckling, I leaned back in my seat, thinking about his answer. It had been an affirmative to what I’d found without committing to the answer. I found that interesting. And telling. The man was holding something back. “Which I’ve done in spades. However, I need to know the risk factors in order to be prepared for any circumstances. If you won’t relay the truth, then I’ll find it on my own.”

“Be careful who you threaten, Major. I would hate to see you confined to a medical facility because of an emotional breakdown.”

I’d been threatened more times in my life than I could remember, but this was so far below the belt I sensed I’d brought the fear of God into the man. Whatever was going on had the potential of blowing up in a hell of a lot of faces. It was time to back down, but I would garner what I needed another way.

“I need to know this. Will Castillo come after her again?”

He exhaled, still frustrated I’d shoved his dick into a vise.

“Yes.”

At least I knew the danger continued to be real.

“Fair enough. I want to speak to Mrs. Cavanaugh.” Why not shoot the moon?

“There is no need. Willow’s parents have been made aware she’s alive and safe.”

“Uh-huh. But they have no desire to talk to their only child? I find that disgusting and not possible.”

“Follow orders, soldier. Period,” he barked.

“What the fuck is really going on,Director?” I overemphasized his title on purpose, trying to piss him off so he’d slip up and say something.

“None of your fucking concern, soldier.”
