“Karina, yes. I want one of our longest residents to meet us in the conference room. I have a prospective new client here, and I want him to see what makes our girls different than the rest,” Vik smirks, and Karina nods, then goes on her way.

José and I follow Vik to the conference room. The room is pretty much all concrete, from the walls to the floor to the table. It’s all there is. The only things that aren’t concrete are the one glass wall where we can see the hallway next to us, the chairs at the table, and the lighting.

“What type of girls and women do you or your clients look for? What sells the most for you?” Vik asks.

“I’m not sure what Otis has said about what I’ve purchased, but I’ve found that—”

“Otis has said nothing, as it’s not his job to tell me what you want to buy. Is Otis on your payroll? Should he be telling me these things?”

Vik leans back in his chair and assesses my reactions to his words. “No, Otis isn’t on my payroll, and I’m certain you know of that already. I only assumed, as a courtesy, Otis might tell you what I’ve purchased, so you could understand the types of things I’m looking for instead of wasting my time and asking me these questions now when I already have a very busy night. You’ve made me late for another meeting, so I’d prefer we get on with whatever spectacle you’re planning.”

“Ah, you’re a man who honors his time. Still, I need answers to my questions,” Vik goes on, and José keeps directing his eyes between the two of us.

“The Eastern European girls are the most sought after, but Chinese are good too. Latinas tend to do well. The bottom line is, I’m always willing to try new things, as are my clients,” I inform him and then look over to José.

The next thing I know, I spot Karina walking up the hallway with a teenage girl in a red dress. The girl’s hair is practically as white as snow, and her features make me believe she’s Eastern European, but she could be Swedish for all I know.

Karina comes up to the conference room doors, and Vik gives her a nod, then she enters with the girl. “Helena, please, come meet my friends.” As Vik speaks, the girl walks over to him and stands beside him, then looks at José and then me. She smiles sweetly and looks between the two of us as she awaits some sort of instruction.

“Helena here has been with my organization for almost ten years. She’ll be turning sixteen around Christmas, and as you can see, she is perfectly behaved. She will do whatever I command of her, as will the others. They don’t fight back because they know what happens to them.” Vik looks over at Helena, and she swallows hard.

“If we disobey, we’ll have a higher price to pay.” It’s as if this saying is something that’s been instilled in her head since she first arrived here. And it’s exactly the sort of thing I’m looking to abolish. My club runs the streets here in Los Angeles, and once I have enough information on who the head honchos are, I can bring this to Breaker. I know he’ll be pissed I haven’t been entirely honest with him about what I’ve been doing, but this is all for the greater good.

I shake my head as the rest of the events from last night go through my mind. I have to stop this. I know I’m getting closer to the center of the trafficking rings here in Los Angeles, but it isn’t happening fast enough.

My phone vibrates on my bedside table, pulling me from my inner turmoil. I need to get downstairs and see Jada. At least she distracts me from all of this, which is what I desperately need right now.

CHAPTERFIFTEEN

Jada

I can’t stop the tears of joy running down my face as Fury tells Shiloh and me about the one time he was cornered in a room with a woman he didn’t want to have sex with. Sometimes it’s like a motion picture film, the shit these guys get themselves into.

“I’m serious. I was hopping over the bed and tables like I was jumping hurdles in an Olympic event, just up and over.” Shiloh bangs her hand on the table, wheezes out for him to stop, and then looks at Hammer.

I take another glance at the two of them while they both continue to laugh, and I can really feel the love radiating off them and myself. I feel like I’m home. I feel like I’ve earned my place here. Not just as Hammer’s sister or Armor’s woman, but just as Jada.

When I made the decision to stay here in Los Angeles, I did so because I needed a fresh start. Of course, Armor was an added bonus. Now I feel like I have everything I could have wanted in a new beginning.

Falling for Armor was an unexpected surprise, but one I’m so happy I got.

I love him. As scary as that might be, I realize that this thing between us is that forever type of love, and I’m not going to fight against it.

Just as Fury is about to say something else, a low, painful groan comes from the back, and we all turn our attention that way.

Sunny and Ice are rushing out. Ice grabs hold of Sunny’s belly and stops walking. She moans and sways slowly from side to side, taking deep breaths. Ice is bogged down with a bag, his jeans, and his shoes, which he’s trying to shove his feet into while still holding on to Sunny.

“Oh my god, what’s happening?” I ask, getting up from my seat and going over to help so that he can get dressed.

“What’s happening is that this baby is trying to make an entrance. This time it’s not Braxton Hicks, that’s for fucking sure,” Sunny snaps out impatiently.

“Oh fuck,” Fury says and takes one step back as if he doesn’t know what he’s supposed to be doing in the situation. Shiloh is quick to step forward, offering to help.

“What do you need? Do you want some ice? Are you going to make it to the hospital? Not Braxton Hicks this time?” Shiloh asks a flurry of questions, even though Sunny just said it wasn’t Braxton Hicks.

“No way in hell is this Braxton Hicks. No way,” Sunny moans again, and Ice hops up from the floor, one boot on, the other discarded.

“Get dressed. We got her.” I push him away, and he looks at her worried before he drops back down to shove his feet into his shoes.
