“Fourth?” I exclaim.

“That’s correct,” the male officer answers. “All female victims.”

“That’s crazy,” Claire says. “Just stalking?”

“No, three out of the four were drugged,” the female officer says quietly. “Resa, do you think you were drugged?”

“No, I feel fine,” she says softly. Tears stream down her face at the thought that something worse could have happened to her.

A knock at the door startles me, and I turn toward the sound.

Zander looks out the peephole and then unlocks the door. “Resa, your boyfriend is here.”

He steps inside the warmth and gives Resa a big hug.

“I’m so sorry this happened to you, hon. I should have been there with you, but I can’t have my cell at work and had no idea you were in trouble.”

Resa clutches onto him. “How did you find out?”

“Zander texted me, and I came over right after my shift ended.”

“Resa,” the male officer continues, “where were you tonight prior to heading here?”

“The Campus Smoothie Cafe,” she answers, “for a smoothie.”

The officers look at each other, and the female one jots a message down on her notepad.

“Coincidence or not?” Claire asks, noticing the same interchange that I just witnessed.

“We’re afraid not,” the male officer responds. “All of the victims have the cafe location in common.”

“Really?” Resa asks in shock. “Do you think this is an isolated thing? Like I was in the wrong place at the wrong time? Can I see the photos of the other victims to see if I remember seeing them there?”

“We are doing a full investigation into this matter, so releasing evidence would not be allowed. Also, most cases like these are isolated and often are not resolved.”

“What should we do then?” Claire asks in a rush. “Just sit by and allow things to happen to female students?”

“Until we are able to find out who is drugging college females, it would be best to walk in groups,” the female officer advises. “And always let someone know where you are going. Even if it’s just a simple text. Texts are great because of the time stamp.”

The officers take down Resa’s personal information and then head out, followed by everyone else.

Claire flops down onto the couch and gives me a puzzling look. “Do you think there’s a connection between tonight and what happened to you at The Shack?”

“I don’t know,” I answer solemnly.

My situation was different because mine was self-inflicted, and I don’t know if I will ever have it in me to admit my weakness.

“Do you think this is an isolated thing?” she prods.

“I think there is a target, yes. But whatever is happening, something tells me it is more than just some random isolated occurrence that will never happen again.”

“Yeah, I agree. So what are we going to do?”

“You are going to stay out of this. I mean it, Claire. I’ll dig around and see if I can uncover anything that would be worthy of the police knowing. But this is serious.”

“I get it,” Claire huffs. “I just feel so helpless, and Resa looked so fragile. I just hope they track down the bastards who are terrorizing women. Last thing we need is to be caught in the crossfire.”

“Trust me, I feel the same way.”
