“You okay?” I ask. The red mark on her face that I left from smacking her is still there though it’s very light.

“What … how … what the heck was that?” She seems flustered like she can’t figure out what she wants to say.

“I’m sure you know what that was.”

“No, see we’ve had sex before. You’ve fucked me before. But that wasn’t any of that ... that was … fuck that was everything I didn’t know I wanted to deserve.” She rolls her neck from side to side as she closes her eyes with a deeply satisfied look on her face.

I know now why it’s so hard for me to even fathom any of what my father says to be true. Ella’s ruined me, plain and simple, when she’s finished with her article I’m not going to be able to let her go.

I look back downat my watch for the second time in less than a minute.

“Oh my God, is he going to lock you in a cage if you don’t call on time?” Carrie rolls her eyes at me before she smiles big and leans in, “Oh …Ishe going to lock you in a cage if you don’t call on time?” She waggles her eyebrows filling the once annoyed remark with sexual innuendo.

“Shut up, it’s nothing like that.” I take a sip of my drink and fight myself not to look at my watch. This is the longest I’ve been away from Percy in a few days and I’m already starting to feel the effects. If Carrie didn’t threaten to call the cops and tell them that Percy had kidnapped me I’m sure I’d be in his bed with him right now.

“Are you sure? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you so hard up to be with a man? I mean he’s not strong-arming you or anything like that is he?” She gazes into my eyes trying to get the truth of what I’m saying. I can’t lie to her anyway, she’d know.

“No, he’s just …” I sigh and put my cup down, “Carrie, he makes me feel alive. His passions and ethics, the way he fights to get to the bottom of a story, the way he holds me like I’m the most important thing he’s ever been around just makes me light up inside. I know it’s very early and we’re just getting to know each other, but I know enough. He’s such a good man.”

“Damn girl. It sounds like you got it bad. So have you two made it official yet?”

“Like has he asked me to go steady?” I giggle, but she just stares at me waiting for my answer. “No, I mean, we haven’t put any labels on each other.”

“So, how do you know you’re not the only one floating on cloud nine over here?” She uses her straw to stir her frozen drink, getting some of the liquor on the bottom to mix with the slushie ice.

“I already asked him if he was seeing someone else.” I squint at her ready for the fight I know she’s trying to have with me.

“Just because he’s not seeing anyone else doesn’t mean that he’s seeing you. He could not be seeing you too.” She leans back, “Look babe, I’m just trying to protect you. I don’t want to have to light his apartment on fire, but I’ll do a bid in jail for you. Unless you and him have a clear discussion, you’re just a booty call.”

I open my mouth to argue, but I can’t. I don’t need to have a label per se, but if we’re going to be with each other like this on a pretty much daily basis I need more than what I got. I need some assurances. “You’re right. He’s going to have to tell me something. The last thing I want right now is to look like an idiot.”

“No, right now what you need is more drinks. If I’m only going to get to see you once a week I need to get all my BFF loving now. Forget him, let’s get wasted!” She raises her cup to mine and I toast her determined not to think about Percy again. I’ll have all the time in the world to figure out what is actually happening between Percy and I.

“I bet he’s over there right now with another woman.” I slur out, swaying as Carrie and I walk toward our building.

“Why don’t you just call him and find out?” Carrie asks around a yawn.

“Oh, like he’s going to tell me the truth.” I roll my eyes.

“True. We should just show up. If she’s there I’ll beat her ass and you bleach his shit.” She says hiccuping.

“Okay.”

“What? What do you mean okay? Are we going, cause I’ll go. I’m never scared. Unless there’s jellyfish. Then I’m going to cry.”

I laugh and have to cross my legs to keep from peeing on myself. “There’s no jellyfish. It’s just Percival and that other hussy he’s sleeping with.”

“Oh, what if there’s like three of them. The man is so mysterious I bet he has a whole gaggle of women tied up in some secret room. What if he runs some sort of sex trade business and that’s why we never see him with a date …?” She grabs my shoulders and turns me to look at her, “What if he’s got a few mail order brides over there right now!”

The possibility of someone else being in Percy’s house is starting to feel more and more like a fact. The alcohol running through my system is enough to get me to believe anything Carrie is saying right now. I’m not going to be pining over a man who is dumb enough to have mail-order brides. No way.

“Let’s go.” Carrie grabs my arm and before I have a chance to ask her what she’s doing she has her hand up and a cab stops in front of us.
