"Nice to meet you, Alice." He nodded.

"Are you going to tell me your name?" I said, smiling at him.

"I'm Sam."

"Cool."

"I take it you were dragged to this event. What was it, like a dare or something?" His eyes crinkled at the side.

"No, it wasn't a dare. Why do you say that?"

"Because you're wearing a dress that you don't look too comfortable in, and I feel like you're wearing it because you were made to. And I've seen you all evening looking over at your friend." He nodded toward Rosalie. "And I figured she's the one who put you up to it?"

"Wow, you are observant."

"Well, I make it my business to be that observant about beautiful women I see." He leaned forward. "And you are very beautiful."

"Oh, thank you," I said, blushing. "You're very handsome."

"Thanks. I was brought here against my will as well."

"Oh? By who?" I looked around. "Please don't tell me by Diesel."

"By who?" He frowned.

I nodded over to the short, pudgy guy who was now sitting at the next table.

"Him."

"Him? His name's not Diesel." Sam started laughing.

"Oh? He told me that was his name."

"Oh no, no, no. That dude's name is Arthur. I know because I met him before the event, and he told me he hoped to meet his future wife."

"Really?" I stared at Sam in bewilderment. "It didn't seem like he was trying to meet his future wife to me."

"Oh, no. Why?"

"He offered me a hundred dollars to go into the bathroom to let him motorboat me."

Sam's eyes crinkled again, and he threw his head back and started laughing. "Well, well, well. And we wonder why he's single."

"I know." I started laughing too. "But I guess I shouldn't laugh too hard because I'm single too."

"Yeah, but obviously not because you want to be." He looked me up and down. "You're stunning."

"Well, you're obviously not single because you want to be either because you are absolutely gorgeous."

"Thank you," he said. "I'm actually here because..." He paused as the warning bell went off. "Well, if you'd like to continue this conversation at a later point in time"—he handed me his card—"I'm Sam."

"I know." I handed him my card. "And I'm Alice."

"I'd never forget that name, beautiful," he said. "In fact, I don't know what you're doing later, but maybe we can get a drink. Your friend can come, of course."

"Oh, that would be cool. I'll ask her."

The final bell dinged, and he stood. "Well, it was nice meeting you."
