Page 64 of Never Falling

"Sorry. I tend to barge in when I want to know what's going on, but let me listen."

"Thanks, girl. And it's okay. I tend to do the same thing sometimes.

"Anyway, I see Foster, and he's flirting with this redhead. She was absolutely gorgeous. She was wearing the tiniest little top. And she was pressing her boobs against him, and he was lapping it up. I could totally see he was into her. He had his arm around her waist, and they were kind of dancing."

"Oh I'm sorry."

"It's okay," I said. "Anyway, I got jealous. So there was this tall guy, and he kept giving me looks all night. So I walked over to him and started dancing with him. He was standing next to Foster at the time."

"Okay," she said. "Was he cute?"

"Not really. I mean, he was okay, but he wasn't my type. I was only dancing with him to make Foster jealous.

"So then Foster sees me, and he was like, 'Alice!' Completely shocked I was there. And I was like, 'Oh hey.' Really nonchalant and pretending I was too cool for school.

"He left the redhead, and he comes over to me, and he's like, 'What are you doing here?' I could tell he was a bit angry.

"And I'm like, 'I'm partying. What are you doing here?'

"And he was like, 'Is Rosalie here?'

"And I'm like, 'No, she's at home.'

"And he's like, 'Okay.' He's like, 'You shouldn't be here. I think you should leave.'

"And I was kind of tipsy, and I was just, 'Well, why, Foster?'

"And he ..." I let out a huge breath. I could feel my arms and hands and legs shaking.

"Oh my gosh. Are you okay, Alice?"

"Sorry. This is the first time I've told this story in a really long time." I closed my eyes, and I could picture the room that evening. The crowds of college kids dancing and drinking and smoking.

"People were making out all over the place. One girl was on her knees, giving a blow job in the corner of the room. The party had gotten out of hand, and I felt really uncomfortable, but I just wanted to impress Foster. I wanted him to see me as more than his little sister's best friend."

"You don't have to finish the story if you don't want to," Molly said, but I shook my head.

"No. I do. I need to get this off my chest.

"So anyway, Foster finally went back to the redhead, and I'm dancing with that tall guy. And then this blond guy comes over: total all-American jock. I think he was on the football team. Just a really good-looking guy."

"Oh cool."

"So anyway, he offers me some of his drink, and I drink it. We're dancing, and he's holding me close. And I start feeling sick. The room starts feeling like it's spinning around me. And I'm thinking to myself, whoa, I'm super drunk."

"Oh man," she said.

"Anyway, I tell the guy, 'Hey, I want to stop dancing because I'm not feeling well.'

"And he says, 'Oh come with me. You can sit down. I know somewhere you can sit down.'

"And I was like, 'Okay.' So we go up the stairs into this bedroom, and there's a bed.

"And he says, 'You can just lie there.'

"And I say, 'Okay.' I just lie down, and I just feel sick to my stomach. I feel like I can't speak. Then he gets onto the bed next to me ..." My voice starts quavering.

"Oh my God." Molly's face looked mortified. "Oh, Alice."
