“At least we’ll know if we’re really compatible then,” he said, stroking my hair.

“You’re right,” I said, nodding. “Okay, I’ll go with you to Brazil and whatever Caribbean island you want.”

“No,” he said. “That’s why I’m giving you the corporate credit card. You can make all the decisions.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, I’ll tell you where we have to be in Brazil and what part of Manaus in the Amazon we have to be in, but then after that?”

“Yeah?” I said, staring at him.

“You decide where we go.”

“What? You’re going to let me decide?”

“Yeah. I want this to be the adventure of your dreams. I had to choose the location this time, or at least the vicinity in the world, but you figure out where we can go. I can take off a week and really focus on just the two of us and not on work.”

“What? You would do that?”

“I need to do that. I don’t want you to think I’m all work and no play. And the fact of the matter is, I am all work. But I want to make time for play. I want to make time for you. I want you to see I’m serious about you, Molly. Okay?”

“Okay.” I nodded. “I’m so excited. I can’t wait to tell Poppy.”

“And Molly?”

“Yeah?” I said.

“Let me help you get an apartment.”

“What?”

“I want to do this not just for you but for Poppy as well. She’s just waiting around, and I know she wants to be in New York with you. I’ll give you an advance of your pay or something, and let’s just get you into a nice two-bedroom so Poppy can come to New York and figure out what she wants to do with her life. I really like her. I know I’ve just met her, and she’s your best friend, but I can already tell she’s a genuine, kind person lookingout for you. And she was straightforward and honest with me, and I like her and…”

“It’s fine. I love her. She’s my best friend. And if you want to do this to help her, I will say yes one hundred percent because I really think she needs to be in New York as well. I think she’s just wasting her life away like I was, and I hope she gets as lucky as me and meets a wonderful man. And I don’t know, I feel weird saying this, but I think my life truly began the day I set foot in New York City and walked away from my family’s lifestyle, and I think the same will be true for Poppy. I think this is the push she needs. I think she’ll find happiness just like me.”

“I’m so glad to hear that you’re happy with me,” he said softly, “and not resentful or—”

“Resentful of what?” I cut him off.

“Me saying that I didn’t think you’d be super happy working at Covington and Associates even though you haven’t been with us very long.”

“It’s okay. I know you’re coming from a good place. And I love you, Travis. Trust me in that I will always love you.”

Chapter 36

Two WeeksLater

Travis

“Are you awake, Molly?” I whispered in her ear. She rolled over slightly and looked up at me with wide blue eyes.

“I am now,” she said, laughing slightly, and my heart leaped for joy. It was a weird feeling. I’d never felt so enamored and taken by a woman before in my life.

“What is it, Travis? Is everything okay?” She blinked up at me, and I nodded.

“I just wanted to say I’m really thankful you’re going on this trip with me,” I said sincerely as she pressed her hand against my chest. “Now, don’t tease me, Molly, dear, or I’ll have to make love to you all over again, and then you’ll blame me for being tired on the plane.”

“We can’t make love again.” She yawned. “We have to get up in just three-and-a-half hours. I’m going to be so tired.”
