“There is no meeting, Molly. We’re going back to my office.”

“What?” I almost screamed. “But you said there was a meeting! You—”

“I wanted to talk to you,” he said. “And I’m the boss. I can do what I want. Now, come on. I’m going to show you to the office.”

“You can’t do that, Travis! I was learning all sorts of things about the finance world and—”

“And what?” he said. “Thinking about salty milkshakes.”

I glared at him. “No, I hate salty milkshakes.”

“I know,” he said. “Do you prefer a caramel milkshake? And guess what?”

“What?” I said.

“I had a caramel macchiato at lunch.”

I bit down on my lower lip. “Are you asking me to give you a blow job, sir? Because I think if you are, I should report that to Janine as the head of HR, and—”

He started laughing then. “Oh, sweet little Molly. We are going to have fun, aren’t we?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. We’re not going to have any fun. I’m here to learn. In fact, I’m here to make a lot of money. I want to be the queen of the finance world.”

“You do?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Okay, then. Tell me what the current interest rate for an I bond is.”

“Say what?” I said, staring at him.

His lips twitched. “The current interest rate for an I bond.”

I licked my lips nervously and tried to think hard. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know. It was part of the presentation today.”

“I was just joking,” I said quickly. “The current interest rate is sixteen percent.”

“Sixteen percent. Okay…really?”

“Well, it’s projected that it will be sixteen percent soon because, you know, inflation and all that good stuff…”

“‘Because inflation and all that good stuff’?”

“Yeah. I mean, ‘Thanks, President Biden,’ right?” I was just repeating random things I’d heard people say. I wasn’t sure if any of them were making sense.

“‘Thanks, President Biden.’ For what?” he asked, questioning me.

“Well, you know…” I shrugged. “Thanks, President Trump, for making…” I paused.

“Molly, I would quit while you’re ahead,” he said, shaking his head. “Because, trust me, you’re not.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean that you have quite a lot to learn. And that’s okay because when we started this program, we said we would take complete newbies. However, we want intellectual people who are fast learners. And as my assistant, you need to catch up a lot faster than everyone else.”

“I’m just curious why I’m your assistant. There are people in there with MBAs. One guy in there worked at Goldman Sachs. I mean, I don’t think I’m the most qualified to be your assistant.”
