“You’re not,” he said in a simple tone.

“So then, why am I your assistant?”

“Because,” he said, “I thought it would be fun.”

“What? How is this fun?”

“I don’t know,” he said. “You didn’t have fun that night that we—”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Mr. Covington.”

“You don’t remember the way my cock slid into your—”

“Mr. Covington!” I said, staring at him wide-eyed. His lips felt like they were coming closer and closer to my face. I felt like I could barely breathe as we walked into his office. “Wow,” I said, looking around. “This is bigger than my studio apartment.”

“Is it really?” he said, surprised.

“Yeah, it is. And wow, this view. You have great views everywhere. You’re so lucky.”

“I guess that’s true,” he said, nodding. He was staring directly at me.

I licked my lips. “So do I have homework for today? Or what’s the first thing you’d like me to learn or know, or—”

“The first thing I would like you to know is that we’re going on a business trip in a couple of days.”

“What?” I said. “I can’t.”

“Yes, you can.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, we’re going to the West Coast.”

“Oh.” I stared at him. “Where, exactly?”

“We’ll be in Los Angeles and San Francisco.”

“Oh,” I said. I wasn’t sure whether I should tell him I came from San Francisco or if he remembered that from the conversation we had at the charity dinner.

Then I thought about my parents and my friends. Should I tell them I’d be in town? And if I did, what would they think about my new job and my new boss and… Everything was suddenly getting so complicated and…

“It’s not going to be a problem, right?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.

“No, no. It’s fine. I mean, I wasn’t sure I could make it because I had other plans, but I could change them. The job comes first.”

“Good,” he said. “Well, you’ll make the hotel arrangements. Don’t pretend they only have one room available,” he said with a small smile.

“Excuse me. What are you talking about?”

“I’m just saying, it’s the oldest trick in the book: to book one hotel room because you wanted to—”

“Excuse me.”

“And then pretend that the hotel made a mistake, or it was all booked or something like that.”

I started laughing then. “Um, you don’t have to worry about that, Mr. Covington. I’m not trying to seduce you. And I certainly don’t want to stay in the same hotel room as you.”

“Really?” he said, taking a step forward.
