“Five thousand dollars,” he said, glancing at my lap.
“What?”
I stared at him.
“Five thousand dollars says you’re wearing cotton panties.”
I pressed my lips together and looked away.
“Ten thousand dollars,” he said then.
I still didn’t look back at him.
“Twenty-five thousand dollars.”
I didn’t glance at him again.
“One hundred thousand dollars and that’s my best offer.”
I turned to look at him then. “Are you fricking serious right now?”
“I am,” he said with a smile.
“You’re going to pay me one hundred thousand dollars if I don’t have on cotton panties.”
“I am,” he said with a nod.
“But that’s crazy. And what if I do have on cotton panties? I’m supposed to pay you one hundred thousand dollars?”
“Or you can give it to me in kind,” he said, licking his lips.
I stared at him for a few seconds. “I don’t believe you. You’re not going to give me one hundred thousand dollars if I don’t have on cotton panties.”
“Oh really?”
He opened his briefcase and pulled out a check. I watched as he wrote my name on the top of it and then one hundred thousand dollars. He signed it and held it up in front of me.
“It’s up to you, Molly. You want the hundred grand or not?”
Chapter 14
I staredat the check in Travis’s hand and rolled my eyes.
“Hey, I need to tell you something,” I said softly.
He looked at me, a curious expression on his face. “Yes? What is it?”
“Um,” I said and leaned forward. “Just in case you didn’t realize, you are not Robert Redford, and I’m not Demi Moore, and we’re not in the movieIndecent Proposal.”
He started laughing then. He started laughing so hard that his entire body shook, and I watched as he ran his hand through his silky-smooth dark hair.
“You’re funny. You know that, right, Molly?”
“I’m not joking.”
“And I’m not joking, either.” He held up the check again. “This is one hundred thousand dollars for the material of your panties. Not to sleep with you.”
“Yeah. Well, do you think I’m some sort of ho? I’m not going to take one hundred thousand dollars so you could see if I’m wearing cotton panties or not.”
