He looked at her and then me, and he offered a rueful smile. “That keeps me up at night, believe it or not. I do question my own ethics when I remain invested in companies that care only about the bottom dollar.” He shrugged. “It’s a complicated question, and one I don’t have a good answer to.”

“I appreciate your honesty,” I said, smiling.

“Thanks,” he said. “Well, this has definitely been an entertaining and stimulating evening.” He looked at me, and then he looked at Poppy. “You’re both very bright. You’re both very beautiful.”

“Oh no, he’s not trying to have a threesome with us, is he?” Poppy said, and I started laughing.

Travis looked mortified. “No, I was just…”

“I’m just joking,” Poppy said. “If we’re going to be friends, which I think we are, then you’ll have to get used to it. I loveto tease Molly, and I love to tease you, too. And that’s another reason I couldn’t work for you because if you were my boss, I’d never be able to tease you.”

“Well, he’s my boss, Poppy.”

“Yeah, but he’s not mine,” she said with a smile. “I mean, as long as you don’t mind,” she asked Travis.

“I don’t mind,” he said. “I like you, Poppy. You’re honest and fun, and I’m glad you’re Molly’s best friend.”

Chapter 23

“Oh,Poppy, it was so great seeing you.” I gave my best friend a hug as we stood outside the restaurant.

“You too. Will I get to see you again while you’re here in San Francisco?”

I looked over at Travis, who was staring at us both with an amused expression on his face.

“Well, we’re going to LA the day after tomorrow. But maybe if you’re free tomorrow?”

“I’m free,” Poppy said, grinning. “You want to do something, Molly?”

“Sure. It will depend what time we finish with work, but if we get off early enough.”

“Yay,” Poppy said. “That would be great.”

“So I have another idea,” Travis said, looking smug.

“And what’s that?” I said. “Hopefully, you’re going to give me the day off tomorrow.”

He started chuckling then. “No. You wish, Molly. You do remember this is a business trip.”

“I know,” I said, rolling my eyes.

“And what’s your idea?”

“Poppy, what are you doing for the next couple of days?” He looked over at her, and she shrugged.

“Not much. Reading a couple of books, looking into some PhD programs, deciding whether or not I want to get an MFA.”

He laughed. “Well, if you’re up for it, how would you like to come to LA with us?”

“What?” she said, her eyes lighting. “Really? But I don’t really feel like driving all that way.”

“Nonsense. You’re not going to drive.” He chuckled. “I chartered a plane to take us. So you’re more than welcome to join us.”

“Ooh, a private plane?” Poppy clapped her hands eagerly. “That sounds like fun.”

“We’re going on a private plane?” I looked at Travis.

“Yeah. That’s what I just said, right?”
