“Uh-huh,” I said, shaking my head.

“But I don’t have serious relationships, and I’m not upset about it. I mean, that works for you, right?”

“Of course,” I said. “We’re just having fun, and at least I don’t have to worry that you have someone else you’d rather be with or whatever.”

“Exactly. We’ve got the best of both worlds right now. We get to work together, and you get to progress in your new career. And outside of the office, we get to sexually please each other.” He smiled. “It’s perfect.”

“Yeah,” I said, nodding. “I couldn’t ask for more out of life.” I was being sarcastic, but I didn’t want him to know that.

“So do you want kids one day, Molly?”

“I think so,” I said, nodding.

“How many?”

“Isn’t this a personal question?” I made a face.

“We can’t ask each other personal questions?”

“I just think it’s weird for us to ask these sort of intimate questions. It’s questions you would ask someone you were dating and…”

“And we’re not dating,” he finished my sentence.

I nodded. “Exactly. I just don’t want the lines to be blurred.”

“You say that a lot,” he said. “How many times have you been in a position where the lines have been blurred?”

I shook my head. “Not many, but I just think that if we’re going to do this, and I think we both want to, then we have to be cognizant of the fact that I’m still your assistant, and I work for you, and we’re hooking up. And anything more than that will just make this a completely…”

“A completely what?” he said.

“I don’t know.” I shrugged. “It will just make it difficult, you know? And we just started this, and I don’t want to make things difficult.”

“So me asking you how many kids you want is going to make it difficult?” I just stared at him. “Well, I’ll tell you, Molly. I’d like two kids, if I have kids of course, a boy and a girl. Preferably, theboy will be older so he can look after his baby sister and take care of her long after I’m gone.”

“That’s a bit sexist,” I said. “You don’t think an older sister can take care of a younger brother?”

“Yes, I do think so, but…”

“But nothing. You shouldn’t care what order they’re in.”

“Fine,” he said. “I don’t care. Then I’d just like two kids, a boy and a girl. Simple as that. So what about you?”

“I don’t know. I’ve always thought I’d have a large family,” I admitted.

“How large?”

“I don’t know, seven kids.”

“Seven?” His eyes almost popped out of his head, and I started laughing.

“Yeah. I mean, I’ve seen those TV shows likeThe WaltonsandKate and Jon,and I just thought to myself, ‘How cool would it be if I had a large family?’”

“Seven kids? Well, good luck to your husband.”

I laughed. “Well, I don’t have a husband right now, so he doesn’t have to worry.”

“Do you put that in your dating app?”
