“It means Creedence that Belle has no idea who or what she really is.” I am completely astounded by this, anger courses through me which makes Sheba leap inside me. As someone who has gone through this myself, I’d hate that another young woman is living a lie like I did. A growl escapes me, and I feel all eyes on me, but I am only focused on Davina.

“How dare you do that to her; she has a right to know who she is and what she bloody is!” Davina’s eyes spark with anger and within a split second she is directly in front of me thanks to her vamp speed. Creed, Cole and Sky move closer, but I raise my hand to stop them and meet Davina’s angry look with one of my own.

“You have no idea what you are speaking about!” I roll my eyes and scoff.

“Please spare me the bullshit. I lived a lie for 18 years, if it wasn’t for my baby daddy tricking my ass, I still wouldn’t know who and what I really am, so save your bullshit lines. Belle deserves to know everything, it’s her goddam right!”

“No!” The anger in her eyes evaporates and is replaced by utter fear. “No one can know about Belle. I will not let her die at the hands of those that wish me dead.” I stumble back in shock and swing my gaze to Creed who is staring at his bio mom like he is finally seeing her for the first time. Silence encompasses the room; Davina is shaking and quite frankly I’m worried I have never seen her so… rattled. Vince moves toward Davina and places a hand on her shoulder in comfort.

“D, we won’t let anything touch her I swear.” Sky shocks the shit out of me when she snorts and begins to laugh like a mad woman. Callie stares at her mate as if she has lost her ever loving mind.

“Skylar, enough!” She stops laughing and turns toward my brother.

“Don’t Cairo, you have no idea.”

“Then tell us Sky, what did you––what happened?” I hate that Ro and Sky have these cryptic talks, it irritates me, even Zeke seems like he is out of the loop most of the time and he was one of their closest friends. Sky looks to Davina with this knowing look in her eyes.

“Why are you so protective over this Belle?” Davina opens and closes her mouth a few times, but no words escape. “Tell me!” Sky yells. “If you’re hiding this from them and it puts my mate in danger, I will kill you.” Davina’s mouth stretches into a cruel smirk as she stares at Sky.

“I’ll tell them my secret if you tell them yours.” A growl erupts from my brother as he steps in front of Sky, He passes Harlem off to Meg as he glares down Davina. Vince saddles up next to D and has his fangs on display, hell no! I cut across to stand next to my brother, none of them will touch him if I have any say in it! Creed and Cole jump in the middle of us and stand back-to-back with Cole facing us and Creed turned toward the others.

“This is not helping anyone! Take it down a notch Davina––“I can’t bite my tongue; the words fly out of my mouth without consent.

“Oh, so you protect yourmothereven after what she did to me and my brother?” As soon as the hurtful words are out, I can’t take them back, I slap a hand over my mouth and turn to Meg who is now staring at her feet like they are the most interesting thing in the world. “I-I, Meg I-I’m––“Creed spins around and in one swift move has his hand around my throat and slams me against the wall, chaos breaks out around us, but Creed and I are lost in an angry glaring match. Growls are tearing out of both of us, I can tell my eyes have changed to the color of my wolf and so has his.

“You want to hurt me, go for it, butmy motherhas nothing to do with any of this. You can yell scream and hate me all you like, but I will not let you tear her down on your way to self-destruction.” I recoil internally and yank Sheba back so I can be in full control.

Don’t Jess, we need to put him in his place.

No Sheba, he’s right. I am lashing out at him but in doing that I am hurting others, that is not who I am.

Then be true to your feelings and face them instead of hiding behind them.

I growl, not at Creed but at the truth that my own wolf’s words hold. I can lie to everyone else, but I can’t lie to her, we are the same person after all. Creed drops his hold from around my neck and steps back, Ro breaks out of Vince’s hold and shoves Creed away from me.

“You ever do that shit to my sister again and I––“The sound of Harlem wailing cuts off his reply. I turn toward my son and see Meg has him clutched against her trying to soothe him, what the hell is wrong with us? We just did that in front of our own son! I break away from the wall and move toward Meg, but Creed cuts me off and glares at me as he grabs our son from his mother and begins to whisper words of love in his ear.

“It’s okay monster, mommy and daddy were just playing I didn’t mean to scare you.” Harlem pulls back and when his eyes lock onto mine I gasp.

Sheba?

I think you’re right; we need to see the letter again.

Creed’s brow is furrowed as he stares at me, I spin away from them and face Davina.

“I need to see that note again.”

“Why?”

“Please Davina, I need to.” She hands me the note and as I scan it over my stomach plummets. I look to Creed, and I can feel the tears threating to spill.

“Princess, what’s wrong?” The gruff tone of his voice tells me that he may be mad at me, but he still cares enough to worry about what is upsetting me.

“They aren’t coming for me Creed.” I whisper.

“What?” the weight of that one-word grounds me and gives me enough strength to say what I need to.

“Belle wrote, they are coming for H.E.R.” His forehead creases as he tries to grasp my meaning.
