“I don’t want a brother anymore.” This clever four-year-old has no idea that thanks to him cracking that joke he saved his aunt and uncle. The car erupts into fits of laughter, the only ones who are not laughing are the salty ass twins in the back.

“I’m so glad Sky doesn’t have a penis.” I snap my head back and glare at my sister.

“Watch your mouth California.” I grit out, she pokes her tongue out and rolls her eyes.

“Oh please, if Sky was a dude and knocked me up, the world would implode, mother earth isn’t ready for two California Reeves. Plus, I would hate for it to come out like the monster and say stupid shit.” I glower at my sister; she really needs to get a filter. No brother ever wants to hear about his sister’s sex life, I shudder at the thought of my baby sister doing the horizontal tango.

“We still have a really long drive; I know everyone is antsy and on edge, but can we please not fight. Also, while we are all here, everyone needs to stop having sly digs at my son, he is four and says it how he sees it, so don’t act like a dick, and he won’t call you out!” we all stare at Jess, she doesn’t waiver under the pressure of our gazes just merely shrugs and turns to look out her window again. The twins manage to remain quiet which is a miracle in itself! Cairo and I refused to let any of our guys lead the convoy of cars, as the alpha’s it is our job to lead, but with that being said when we are about halfway we pull over into a gas station to swap Harlem into my mom’s car. Jess of course refused to ride with them, I don’t trust the council or Jacob not to have set a trap for us, and if there is an ambush, I want my son as far away from it as possible. After transferring his seat and strapping him in, Jess and I both cuddle and give him a kiss, I feel a lump rise in my throat as I look at my son. A renewed sense of determination flows through me, I never want to be separated from him or my mate again and if that means killing every member of the council and Jacob–– I’ll do it.

As we near Rosewood the tension in the car amps up, we instructed the cars travelling with young and the older members not to enter the town and stay hidden on one of the dirt roads until we sent for them. I want to make sure everything is secured, and no one is waiting for us, I don’t know this Belle woman and I sure as fuck don’t trust her. For all I know someone could have forged that note and we’re travelling into a trap. I reach over and clasp Jess’s hand in mine giving it a gentle squeeze, I can tell the smile she gives me is forced but I don’t have time to dwell on it as we are finally crossing into Rosewood. I stare out my window stunned speechless.

What the fuck?

I can’t scent anyone.

No shit Corbin, it looks deserted.

“What the hell happened here?” Zeke took the words right out of my mouth. The whole main street is void of people; I wouldn’t be surprised to see some tumble weeds rolling through the township. As we head toward my pack lands, I begin to scent humans but there isn’t many, where did everyone go?

“We need to figure out what the hell happened here. I get that the pack left but why have the humans up and left as well?”

“That is exactly what I want to know Cole.” I reply, the rest of the car ride to the pack lands is quiet as we all stare out the windows and get lost in our own thoughts. As we get closer to my pack lands, I begin to get anxious about what awaits us, this could be a trap for all we know. “Stop the car.” Cairo does as I say and pulls over. Before they speak, I hop out of the car and run to the vehicle behind us, Asher, and Tommy both jump out to meet me and I can feel Cairo and Zeke coming up behind me.

“What’s going on Creed?” I can tell Asher is worried and already on high alert, good. I need all my men to stay sharp until I am sure there is no threat.

“I want some of you to drive up to the pack house and the rest to shift and take a wide birth around and see if you can scent anything or find anything. Something isn’t right and I want to know what that is before my mate and son get caught in a crossfire.” Both Asher and Tommy nod then turn to go fill the rest of the pack in, Cairo motions for Zeke to go do the same with their pack.

“We gonna wait for them or go at the same time?”

“No, the wolves will go first and when I’m satisfied it is safe, I’ll mind link Jess and let her know.” Cairo lets out a low whistle and raises his brows.

“Yeah, that isn’t going to go down well with my sister at all.” I sigh, I know he’s right, but I am the alpha, and it is my job to lead my pack. I am no coward, and I will not stay back and send my men into the unknown where I am not willing to go myself.

“I’ll go tell her.”

“Yeah bro, better you than me.”

What a drop nuts!

Chapter

Forty Four

Jessica

I have been a ball of nerves ever since I relented to Creed and agreed that I would stay behind while he and the others scout the pack lands. I hate the thought of him out there and potentially in danger, I know Creed isn’t the type of alpha to stand down from a battle, but the selfish part of me, wishes he would.

“He’ll be fine.” I release the breath I didn’t know I was holding.

“You don’t know that Ro.” My brother scoffs and Cole chuckles which earns him a glare from me.

“My brother is to stubborn to die, Jacob is sly and cunning, but he is no match for Creed.” My brow furrows, I feel like I am missing something here. “Look, Creed is strong and resilient. He was raised for this shit and thrives off the danger, don’t insult him by assuming that he can’t hold his own. I have seen my brother go into battle when other alphas would try to claim our land, Creed always won.” A thought hit me then.

“If Creed won those fights, then doesn’t that mean he would have to take over the other packs?” Cole smiles but it doesn’t reach his eyes.

“Creed will never deliver the killing shot; he would always let the other alpha leave with his pack if they swore never to return.” I reel back at a loss for words. “Creed never wanted to be like our father so he… changed things.”

“I-I had no idea.”
