Forty Nine

Credence

We stayed in my old room last night, I didn’t want to leave the twins or mom alone last night. We’re all sitting around the breakfast table, but the vibe in the room is dull and tense, the only one who seems to be happy and cheerful is Harlem. His laughter and smiles seem to be the only thing that is keeping everyone from breaking down or losing their shit. I sit here and watch my mom, the twins, Sky and Jess avoid looking at each other and I’m annoyed at myself because I don’t know how to fix this situation. A knock at the front door pulls me from my thoughts, I jump to my feet to answer it. I scent the air and relax when I pick up on Zeke and Cairo, I open the door glad for the distraction and reprieve from the gloom in the dining room, but when I see their faces my stomach drops.

“You both have faces like a slapped ass, so this clearly isn’t a happy visit.” Ro glowers but steps back and motions for me to come outside. I sigh and close the door behind us and move over to the old wooden chairs on the porch. Ro and Z both take a seat, and we look out over the pack lands, we sit in silence for a moment and I’m grateful for the peace, they look pissed off, so I know whatever they are about to tell me is going to make a shit day even worse!

“Tomlin sent word; the council isn’t in the states they fled to Russia.” I spin so fast toward Ro I feel my neck crack.

“Come again?”

“They fled brother; I don’t know what else we can do.” The defeated tone in Ro’s voice is annoying me. I need solutions not problems, and that seems to be all he is bringing to me these days.

“Now that we know they are not in US that means we deal with Jacob first, and then we travel to them.” Cairo and Zeke both have the same look, they stare at me like I have lost my mind.

“You’re joking right?”

“No. Jess won’t be able to relax and move on if they are still out there, I won’t have her looking over her shoulder. She deserves better than that and so do we. They killed my fucking father Cairo and sent his head back to me, they will die for that––every last one of those sleezy fucks!”

“Okay, we deal with Jacob first but after that is done, we send the other packs home. I will not bring them into this.”

“We need the numbers Ro––“

“No, if they have fled the country then that means they left with minimal numbers, they would only take a few with them so they don’t raise suspicion.” I sit back and think on that for a moment, he has a point. If they fled the country, they wouldn’t take hundreds of wolves, but that doesn’t mean they haven’t roped the Russian packs in and forced them to protect them. If we are going to take this fight abroad then we will need to enlist the help of other packs around the globe and that is going to be difficult, we may have some sway here over other alphas, but we don’t have shit overseas. I hang my head in frustration, how the hell are we going to work this?

“I have an idea.” I lift my gaze slowly to meet Zeke’s stare. “We all work together to take Jacob out, but when it comes time for the council, our pack will take care of them.” Has he lost his ever-fucking loving mind?

“What part of we don’t have the numbers did you not understand?” Zeke narrows his eyes as he glares at me, Cairo leans back in his chair and remains silent, clearly, he and Zeke have already discussed this before coming to me.

“We all go to Russia, they will know we’re coming, but if a small group of us land there they won’t be alerted, take out Jacob for your mate, and after that well take over.”

“No Zeke, I won’t––.” A growl that tears out of Cairo has me pausing.

“Your fight is over after this, you will not help, follow or have anything to do with taking down the council. Let us do this for you, so you, my sister and nephew can live in peace, she deserves that Creed.” The alpha part of me wants to tell them to go fuck themselves, but the rational side of me is entertaining the idea of not fighting anymore and being able to live in peace. After everything the pack has been through, they also deserve a peaceful life.

“I will only agree to this if I know when and how you are going to do it.” They both nod, but I raise my hand to stop them from celebrating too early. “Also, you have to tell Jess and the others.” They both nod reluctantly; I don’t envy them, I know for a fact they are going to have an even harder time convincing Jess than they did me.

“You are out of your fucking mind Credence!” I growl at the ballsy son of a bitch and allow Corbin to come forward so he can feel the raw alpha power surging inside me. Andrew may be an alpha, but he is also one of the ones that I beat and let live.

“We are on my fucking lands; you will show me the fucking respect that I deserve you prick.” I yell, I clench my fists at my sides trying to tamper the burning rage inside. We have been trying to work out a plan of attack for nearly two hours and I’m about ready to smash their skulls in. Whoever thought it might be a good idea to group so many alphas together was going to be easy is sorely mistaken. We can’t seem to agree on anything and whenever I think we are getting close to finalizing the plan one or two of them will pipe up and shut it down. I turn to Jess and glower at her, she shrugs her shoulders and stands from the log she was sitting on. We thought it would be a good idea to host this meeting out back incase tempers flared, and someone shifted. At least that way there’ll be no damages to the house.

Jess claps me on the shoulder and moves in front of me. “Gentlemen I asked you all here to help us not fight but more than that I want to give you all the opportunity to be free. Do you like living under the council’s rule? Being at their beck and call?” She looks over each of them, taking her time to make eye contact with each of them, no one answers, but their body language is enough. “We could have gone about this a different way, but we didn’t. None of us wanted to come your lands and pick a fight just so we could take over your packs and use you and your people for our gain. That is not who we are or how we want things to be done moving forward––“Ashton the alpha to the Nomad pack stands, he isn’t the type to speak often or ever be away from his pack lands. Dad told me he is an honorable man… just thinking about my father has a pit forming in my stomach. I push my feelings back down and promise myself I will deal with them when this is all over.

“Without a council to lay down the laws and rules we will become savages, what do you propose then?” That… is a good question.

“You may all think I am bias and swayed, but I can assure you I am not. I think we need to elect someone as our… king, I guess we will call it, and I think that person should be Creed.” My mouth drops open in shock, but before I can ponder what she has said chaos erupts and everyone begins to shout and curse, men begin to volunteer themselves as ourking. They carry on shouting for a few minutes before Jess screams at the top of her lungs, it’s so loud everyone including myself covers our ears. We all shoot her a glare which she shrugs off and smiles sweetly.

“Please take your seats so we can discuss this like grown adults. I get you all want to measure dicks and prove who has the biggest. I know for a fact that half of you have challenged my mate for his role as alpha and failed.” Half of the assholes drop their gazes or look around not wanting to acknowledge that what jess is saying is true. “I know he is one of the youngest alphas and new to this, compared to a lot of you, but let’s be clear, can any of you that fought him, say that you would have done what he did? Would any of you have shown each other mercy or compassion?” She doesn’t give them a chance to answer. “No, I didn’t think so. You would have happily killed him and taken what is his so you could brag about how big and mighty your dick is. I personally would trust him with my life, he is rash and blunt, but he is also smart and cunning. The plan he has come up with to take Jacob out is the best one I have heard, and you all know it––“

“Why the hell should we listen to a woman? You are no alpha; you have no standing or title here amongst us.” I growl out a warning, my nails turn to claws as I fight back the shift, Corbin doesn’t like our mate being underestimated before I can even open the link between me and Corbin, Sky shocks the hell out of me when she jumps to her feet and comes to Jess’s aide.

“Because Albert, she is the daughter of two alpha bloodlines and the rightful heir to both these packs, which makes her superior to you, yougutless fucking drunk. Now sit the hell down before I break your fucking nose you slimy pig, we are in the 21st fucking century and woman lead now, so get used to it or we will take your pack from you!” Each of the men here may be alphas and rulers where they come from, but each and every one of them have heard about Skylar Cage, I guarantee it. Sky’s reputation proceeds her and if these fools are smart, they won’t push her or antagonize her in any way.

We finally managed to come to an agreement on how to take Jacob out, it was like pulling teeth, but I refused to leave that clearing without a day and plan on when Jacob would meet his maker. Ending his life will be my greatest honor, just the thought of ripping his throat out has Corbin growling his approval inside me. I’ve been lying here for hours unable to sleep, rather than tossing and turning and waking Jess I decide to get up and check on Harlem.

I make my way across the hall and poke my head in to see him sleeping soundly, Jess and I agreed that after Jacob is… dealt with, we will give his room a makeover. I want him to have the room of his dreams and know that this house is his home, the prospect of watching my son grow in the house that I built with my bare hands fills me with warmth.

We have our mate and pup; the pack is behind us as well.
