“Because my wolf won’t allow me to live with two alphas.” I deflate a little on the inside, Cairo leaving is going to gut Jess.
“We’ll figure something out––.” He shakes his head and cuts me off.
“Nah man, you and smalls don’t want me hanging around, I’ll come back though. But for right now, I have to do this.”
“Jess is going to try and stop you.” He smiles sheepishly.
“That is why we’re going to sneak out while she is distracted sorting out her new pack.”
“Fuck no! If she finds out I knew and didn’t tell her she is going to castrate me!” Everyone chuckles well I glare. “I’m very fond of my dick thank you very much.” Cairo’s laughter cuts off immediately as meets my stare.
“Creed, for the first time ever, my wolf won’t let me rest and it’s because of something to do with this Belle. I need to find her and figure out what hold she has over my wolf, or I will go mad.” The truth is clear in his words and if anyone can understand what he is saying it’s me. I reach out and pull him in for a bro hug.
“Don’t fucking die or your sister will kill me.” He chuckles and pats me on the back as he steps back.
“That’s not such a bad thing.” I shake my head at him, when my sister steps forward, the smile vanishes from my face and my shoulders slump.
“Does mom know?” She bites her lip and shakes her head; I release a sigh and focus my gaze over her head to Sky. “If anything happens to her, I’m coming for you Skylar, guard her with your life.” Sky has an evil smirk on her face, but she nods. Callie wraps her arms around my waist and rests her head against my chest, I hold her close to me and breath her in.
“I love you big brother.” I’m man enough to admit that I have to force the lump down in my throat so I can talk.
“I love you to California, you have to call me every second day or I’m coming after you!”
“I’ll make the calls.” I lift my gaze to see my brother standing next to Sky with his hands stuffed in his pockets, my eyes widen when I realize what he means.
“Not you to!” I whine, he smiles sadly and nods.
“Look, after what happened on the island with us it showed me that I have to do my own thing, or risk fucking up our family. I’m not leaving because of you; I’m going with them because I have to do something different.” I release Callie and move toward my brother, I never realized until now how much he has changed in these past few months. He isn’t that carefree quarterback anymore, he looks like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders and if this is what will help him, then who am I to stop it. I grab him and hug him.
“I love you brother.”
“Love you to Creed.” I take a deep breath and step back; I look to my siblings and smile sadly as I say.
“I, Credence Reeves of the Reeves pack release you both from my command as your alpha.” The twins’ eyes widen, a sob comes from my sister. “You both deserve a fresh start, the least I can do is give you both the freedom to do that. It goes without saying, this pack is yours and if either of you choose to return, then I’ll welcome you both back.” They each thank me and give me a hug; I stand beside Davina and watch as Cairo instructs those of his pack that want to come with him to follow. A lot of the elders and younger wolves choose to stay behind, Cairo cuts his gaze to me, and I nod, they will remain here with us as part of our pack should they choose it.
“What you did for the twins… that was––.” I cut her off.
“I did what mom would have wanted me to do, after everything they have been through, they deserve this.” Davina nods and then steps in front of me, she meets my gaze, and I can see the unshed tears in her eyes which stuns me.
“You would think I would be used to saying goodbye by now, huh?” She chuckles but there is no humor to it. I admit standing here in front of her is hard. “Look after that beautiful boy and love him right.” I nod, we stand there staring at each other for a moment before she sighs and turns to leave, when she is two feet away, I call out to her. “Yeah?”
“The same offer applies to you as well; my pack is always open to you.” I see a stray tear fall from her eye, but she quickly swipes it away. “I’ll…send you pictures of Harlem, at least well your away you can see your…grandson grow.” Her hand covers her mouth, another tear leaks out as she nods and walks away.
Mom and Jess lost their shit when I told them, mom tried to call the twins numerous times and Jess tried calling Cairo but none of them got through. They have both been giving me the cold shoulder for two days, but Jess has no choice but to speak to me today. We have sent all the other alphas home and thanked them for helping us, each of them lost wolves and it is a debt I will never be able to repay. This battle has opened a link between all of us that wasn’t there before and it’s all thanks to Jess. Cairo’s pack members have decided to stay with us but not join which is fine, they have been given homes and the elderly offered to help out at the school and other places of work which we appreciate. Jacob’s old pack was sent back to their land on the other side of town until Jess decided what she wanted to do, thanks to her giving me the silent treatment I have no idea what she has planned. She called a meeting for her pack and the Reeves pack today to discuss what happens from here. We stand out in the middle of the field under the glaring sun, there is at least four hundred shifters here including what small amount I have from my pack. Pack members that chose to join Jacobs pack stand among those numbers with their heads bowed in shame.
Jess and I stand before both our packs with our son in the middle of us, Jess looks fucking sexy and badass in her ripped black denim jeans, Converse and plain white shirt, her hair blows subtly in the light breeze. She runs her gaze over each of the wolves standing in front of us, some of them shuffle from foot to foot nervous.
“I know you all think you were asked here so I could punish you for going against us.” Mumbles break out but Jess continues. “That willnothappen, I know some of you were taken from your original packs or forced to join Jacob’s so, I want to give those of you who wish to leave or return to your packs a chance to do so now.” My mouth drops open in shock, this woman never ceases to amaze me.
“You’ll just let us go?” Someone calls out.
“Yes, I am not Jacob. I will not force you to stay here, I’ll be honest, I never wanted to be an alpha, and this is all new to me as well. I’m going to make mistakes, but I promise I will learn and do my best, if you choose to stay then you have to know that our pack will be joined to the Reeves pack.” Holy shit, this is news to me! Jess turns to face me, and I can see the uncertainty in her eyes as she asks. “Is that okay?” I smile and reach over gripping the back of her neck to pull her to me so I can smash my lips to hers in a quick kiss.
“Of course, it is princess.” She smiles widely at me before turning back to face the others.
“I want us all to live happily and peacefully. None of you will be forced to fight or do anything of that sort, we are trying to raise our son to do better than us. I want him to grow and see how a pack should be lead and how to treat people right, no one is better than anyone here, we are equals.”
